Radio reception is terrible!

OK, I had a power antenna on my car when I bought it. 3 months later someone so kindly breaks it off for me. So instead of replacing it, I bought a different antenna, for style. I forget what kind and all, but I got it on Ebay, its a little one, like 4" tall black rubber. I had to tap it into a power supply (as required by the instructions). It claimed reception just about as good as factory, but this thing is pathetic! I could get stations 100 miles away with factory, I can't get them much farther then 40, on a good day. Is the antenna messed up? Or is the power hook up wrong? Or did I just get screwed? What about an antenna booster, would it help enought to get those 100 mile stations?

the factory diversity antenna rocks... but its powered, if you've gone aftermarket, you must use the remote turn on lead to power on the antenna.
