I just got two of these (10inch in a bandpass box) for free. I looked up in Crutchfield and it said the JBL Grand Touring (i am pretty sure thats gotta be what the GT is for) are 18-275 RMS and 1100 Peak...The rms is low but the peak is pretty dman high! Just wondering if anyone's heard these subs and how loud they are and good they sound. Don't tell em abotu better subs because I got these and for the $260, they cost and another $200 or so for the box I'm not gonna give them up, at least for a little bit. And at that wattage...How many watts shoudl i look for in an amp? Thanks.

I think you are talking about the JBL GTI series subs. JBL's top of the line that is normally impossible to find. JBL is closing out on the old stuff to make room for a newer version. I think Crutchfield bought out the rest of the stock and that's why they can sell them at half or less of the retail price. I remember them needing either a huge sealed or ported box. And yes they should be able to handle high power. JBL still had the specs and enclosure recommendations on the web at their site. I would download the abode version and build the right box.

In my previous car, I had a JBL GT 10 in a ported tube, and that thing really kicked *** for the money. I always planned on upgrading the sub when I killed the JBL, but it never complained. For the low price, I'd get another one in a second.

I have 2 JBL 8" DVC GT Series in a band pass, and it's a pretty good setup. It was my first sub set up with the bose system. It came through pretty strongly, and was a good fit with the loud bose. Actually I was using it with my a/d/s highs and mids while I was tuning and it hung very well compared to two sealed 10" JL-4s.

A big amp concideration is wiring. Are the JBLs DVCs. If they are I would run them parellel-series for a 4 ohm load and bridge out a stereo amp with 300-400 watts. If they are not there are several diffeant ways to run them.

the subs...

I DON'T know exactly what they are...I don't know if they're GTI or DVC or whatever. All I remember was it said GT on each sub and when i looked it up in crutchfield there was a Grand Touring series, so I just figured thats what they were. They shoudl be here (i mailed them from FL on sunday) on the next couple days...I'll post a pic when i get them, maybe someone will recognize. Jmax-the box does seem pretty big, it was 60 pounds when i mailed it also. i'm gonna hit up the website to see what i cna find.

Yeah, you need to see what ohm load they'll have before you can select an amp.

Looks like Crutchfield either sold out of the GTI's or never offered them on the web. You probably got the GT 1041 or 1081. The 4 or 8 represent the impedance. I am not sure what you mean by a band pass box for these subs. There is no mention of a feasable design on Crutchfields site but there may be one on JBL's site. 3/4 cubic foot sealed or 5/4 cubic foot ported. No mention of the recommended port diameter or length. If you are getting the enclosure custom built for $200 make sure it is correct.

the box...

it came with the subs, I got them for free so I am not buyign anything! They ahve to at least eb a year old, which is why I was asking you guys because their picture doesn't match any on the websites for JBL/Crutchfield...A Bandpass box is when both subs are enclose INSIDE a box with ntohign outside, there is a plexiglass "window" where you can see the subs in the front... It looks like they ahve the seperate chambers...There are also ports. Stilln to here yet but shoudl ahve been friday. This is what happens when you ship USPS.

I know what a bandpass box is. I just didn't know that it was a good enclosure for those subs. If they are used and in the wrong box I wouldn't pay more than $100 for the whole set-up. Even used in the correct box. I don't put much value on something that I can make as well or better myself for next to nothing. And used subs don't have much resale value.

If it was free, why not give it a shot.... Nothing to lose, right? Here are some things to consider, though...

Bandpass boxes have high potential, but are very hard to design and build properly. For example, A reputable car stereo shop will tell you up front, that it'll cost more money, not for the wood or the parts, but because it'll take them more time to design and build and test and tune it properly.

Bandpass boxes are very efficient, so you normally wouldn't need too extreme of an amp. However, to be safe, spend a few extra dollars on an Amp that'll be powerful enough to drive the two woofers in a conventional enclosure too... Here's why....

Let's assume the box winds up sounding terrible (that's why your friend/cousin/older brother gave it away, wasn't it? :-)

Since it WAS free... plug the ports of the box. Fill it with Polyfill. Cut speaker openings in the box, and mount the speakers as if it's a normal sealed enclosure. It'll sound much much better, I bet.

A few hundred watts should do the job.

And finally... (stepping up on my soapbox) Please, no flames, I don't know you personally, or the friend who may have given you the box, and I have no reason to think this is the case.... But just in case....

If the box is "hot", don't accept the box, and cancel any advice that I have provided. If nobody in the world bought or accepted stolen things, then there would be less of a market for hot items, and there would be less theft. (Stepping off my soapbox)

I've got two JBL GT 12's in a bandpass box from best buy. My girl was trying to get me 1 Rockford Fosgate 12...but something got screwed up on the order at Circuit City...so they gave her two JBL GT 12's for $99. She was really tripping...that's why they gave her the deal..she got in the manager's a$$. They are the ones with the dual voice coils and are running 2 ohms. Each is hooked up to a Pioneer amp pushing about 500 watts each. It sounds really good, especially for the money. Now if I could just make this trunk stop rattling...............................

I doubt you can hear the trunk when you are driving 60mph or more.
