cone dented, a bad thing?

Question for you guys, my friend just got some speaks off ebay, supposed to be mint, but one of the cones is dented around the dust cap. No tears or anything, but not perfectly smooth anymore, a little wrinkled. It's an infinity something or other, I think they are kappas, with the white cone. Seems alright, but he's going to have some nice power on them. Think it'll blow or be screwed up? I have no experience with non-mint speaks so I can't inform him.

I think the white Infinity's are reference series. Kappas are green.

Anyways, is this a woofer that's damaged or a sub or tweeter? If it's the woofer (goes in doors) or a subwoofer, I'd send it back. If it's a tweeter, then I don't think it's that big a deal. I tore one of my tweeters when I installed it and it still sounds fine.

The cone itself is white. It's a 6.5 I'm pretty sure. It's a wrinkle near the bottom of the cone. Doesn't look bad, just not sure how power will affect it. Not sure how to smooth that out, but it seems like it could be. Sometimes ebay deals suck and people aren't keen on returns.

i can tell you right now, if you try and repair it yourself, you will get no warranty help. id wait until after you get ahold of the seller before doing anything.

I'll put a $100 bill on the table right now. If it is just a dent and you can hear the difference between the two speakers, the $100 is yours. You can probably push on the back of the cone to smooth it out. Remember, these were bought on ebay so there is no warranty. They have to be used if they are bought on ebay unless the seller is a dealer authorized internet retailer.

I don't think that's true about the warranty. If the product is sold as new and unopened, the warranty is good. Not like the manufacturer knows where you got it from.

Show the receipt that you are going to send in with it! Infinity is a respectable company, but a dent is not a manufacturing defect, it's user abuse / misuse. Hook the speakers up and see how they sound. I don't know about you but in two and a half years the number of times I have staired at my speakers closely enogh to notice a dent, while the car and system was running is 0.

I bought both amps, 2 sets of speakers, and a sub off eBay. The seller has a store so the receipt looks like bought the items at a store. If the item comes fresh out of the box with damage, they will replace them. Ask Soundmike, he had a set of Infinity speakers with torn cones, he contacted them, they sent him replacements. They even let him keep the damaged ones.

When I get anything new and open the box, I lovingly caress the new item and go over every inch of it for damage or defects.

I could care less how carefully you look them over. Can you hear the dent? That is ultimately waht matters.

It's not just if you can hear it now. Maybe it sounds fine now but the dent could cause the cone to fail under heavy usage. Or maybe it's making a sound that you don't realize you're hearing, and it's causing acute brain dysfunction, but you don't hear it so you don't know why your head hurts all the time when you listen to the stereo in your car. Also, if you just paid for it brand new, why not demand that you get it in perfect condition?

Thankyou! Why did you ask us in the first place? Don't forget, just because someone is an authorized dealer, if they in fact are we don't know, but it doesn't mean they are authorized for mail order or internet sails. Their is more money in scams on Ebay in a day than I will most likely make in my life working hoestly. By all means, if you are going to hear a tiny imperfection in a speaker cone that is mounted at least 45 degrees off axis and battleing 70-80 dB's of background noise, ship it back and wait for a replacement. Just quit makeing a moron of yourself.
