I have a guy who will give me a pair of Punch 12's real cheap, which amp should I use to run them? The are the XLC 2412's, their RMS is 200 and peak 400 (4 Ohm). I want to run them in a sealed box or the deathbox, which Punch or Power amp should I use???
If they are the 4-ohm version, you're gonna have to either buy a really expensive RF amp that puts out a lot of wattage at 4-ohm stereo or get a 4-channel amp and run it dual bridged mono. See if the Punch 600a4 or Punch 800a4 are in your budget.

I think I can afford the 800a4, just was hoping I could stick to a 2 channel amp...Any other options...or dish the speakers...$25 bucks a piece brand new in the box (hmm!!)

Rockford
if you want a rockford amp for the two xlcs I would suggest 1 of three....250a2 500a2 800a2.....depending on if the subs will handle the 800a2, really it comes down two can your mids keep up with your base or do you jsut want pounding and no mids? if you do not have an amp on your highs go with the 500a2 at the biggest....if you want to listen to it and have it sound decent not muddy,,,250 a2 with 4 ohm subs it will reap about full power from your amp....its is surprising what the rockfords can do....but in my best opinion....
Buy JL Audio!!!!!!!!!!!

If you bridge a 4-channel amp to dual bridged mono, the amp will essentially be a 2-channel amp. BTW, it will sound the same. The number of channels isn't important; the power and ohm load are important.

I would get a single class D mono amp. Like the MTX250D which is rated at 250 watts into 2 ohms at 12.5 volts. 350 watts @ 14.4 volts. Most MTX put out at least 10% more power if not 30%. So it should put you close to the 400 watts you are aiming for. And it should be cheaper, simpler to install and take up less space.

Jmax,
Will it give me close to 400 watts to (2)Punch 2412's 4 ohm speakers....Is this a 2 channel or 4 channel amp? Where can I get some specs for the MTX250D?

If you have two 4 ohm speakers as you say - RF's product lit that I have does not say if they are dual or single coil but it looks like single - then parallel will be 2 ohms, series 8 ohms. Two woofers wired in parallel to a monobloc amp that puts out about 400 Watts RMS into 2 ohms should work well. MTX's power ratings are at 12.5 volts which is roughly what you see with the engine off. RF I think specs their amps at 13.8 or 14.4 Volts. The monobloc should be cheaper, smaller and since it is class D it will draw less current.

First test the speakers you have and make sure they are OK.Or have someone else do it if you don't have the right gear. As far as selecting an Amp you don't need to buy an Amp with more power than the speakers can handle.Remember this the audio scale is logrythmic<sp> meaning an 800 watt amp only gives a 3 decibel increase over a 400 watt amp. In other words 100 watts is not twice as loud as 50; 200 not twice as loud as 100 ect.Build a good sturdy box!Consider cross bracing it too with that amount of air movement and amp power.I'm a fan of sealed boxes especially with big woofers and high power. A box with a port has no audible output below the ports tuned frequency. Good Luck

Jmax let me tell you, "You the Man".....Thanks for recommending the MTX 250D. The amp is awesome. I won it on Ebay for $165 and I got it yesterday. I hooked it up and mounted it this morning and it thumps. Just need to break my Punches now....

Hey, I am waiting on some 90-110 mm screws to mount my enclosure so my 1000D isn't hooked up yet. But I was happy with the 204 and 304 I used to have hooked up. But tell me, Do you have any noise, turn on, turn off or anything with that class D or is it just as clean as the rest of MTX's amps?
