MDF - Strong yet heavy. Great for enclosures and ease of use
Plywood - Strong, lighter, splinters when working with it. Not quite as strong as MDF.
Thin carboard OEM flooring - Lightest weakest, OK for hauling groceries and covering in vinyl to make it look pretty.
Like I said. All depends on what you're doing. Keep in mind, MDF comes in a variety of thicknesses. I've seen 1/4" all the way to 1.5".

The nice thing about MDF is that it is flat. If you go to Home Depot and check out the plywood and particle boards they are almost always warped.

You guys are using the wrong kind of plywood. There are varieties much stiffer and lighter than MDF. But also a few times more expensive. What really nice is how it can hold a screw. Ever mount a sub in MDF and have to take it out for some reason? Notice how much less holding power the screws have every time you take them out and reinsert? Big problems with MDF for any parts that will be moving around or need to be screwed together.
