Bass Rattles Car - HELP!

Whats up guys? I have a quick question. I have 2 12" subs in the trunk of my car, and they rattle everything. The bass sounds good on the inside of the car, but on the outside, it sounds awful. It just sounds like nothing but metal vibrating. I tried Dynamatting my trunk lid, but that didn't do a whole lot - although it did help a little bit. Please help! I want it to sound good when I ride past people as well as in the car. Thanks!

thats not ghetto

it took me 1 whole piece of dynamat to do my bumper...most of the vibration came from the styrofoam that fills the gap in the rear bumper, thats where the rags came in handy for me.

i still gotta do my rear deck and a spot above my rear view mirror

The rag thing worked for me to. I've also heard of an expanding foam that you can spray into areas that are loose to fill in gaps.

i sprayed expanding foam in my trunklid and it completely engulfed the latch so that i couldn't open the trunk. best part? it was the night before a weekend in philly with my girl and i had all my clothes in the trunk!

since i had a box bolted into the trunk the ski pass wouldn't work.

bottom line? sawzall to the metal rear seat back.

Here is what my friend done, and I will too........ thick carpet from the top of the trunk lip then under you sub to cover the enitre trunk. Two problems from that........

One: What made your trunk rattle will now be directed to the front of your car. YOU WILL FEEL IT!

Two: You will have to readjust you enitre acoustics in your car. The bass will definitely screw all that up.

BTW: If you are using your rear deck speakers, you might want to find baffles (covers) for them because the bass will distort them.

OMG i know exactly what u went through! I had to crawl in the back with a 2'12 inch box that i had to unbolt from behind. To make matters worse, i broke my key in the trunk lock b/c i turned too hard. Boy that was a pain in the ***, not to mention the stuff never dried and dripped on my bumper. This would not come off later, and i had to spend 3 hours taking it off with a razorblade, being so careful not to scratch the paint.

That's hilarious. The stuff used properly works wonders. Just goes to show you should read the instructions on the can if you have never used the stuff before.

I used foam in my trunk lid, but not the expanding kind. I used a cheap egg crate mattress pad from wal*mart. Cut it up and shoved it in.

I did read instructions, duh. I put 5 cans in tehre. It was too much and never dried. It actually turned into a liquid afer a while. The parts that dried were around the lock b/c the liquid dripped into the lock. The stuff works, but its only a temporary fix.

Uh, duh. One can should have been plenty for the areas far from the lock mechanism. The lock should have been filled in with flexible material. Material that can allow the lock mechanism to still move freely without vibrateing obnoxiously. I guess I should have included understanding the directions, not just reading them.

He used that type of carpet that wasn't too shaggy, but it was sure thick! Carpet is a sound deadining material, it doesn't reflect sound as it hit it, it absorbs it. So it doesn't vibrate. The rest of the sound waves that isn't absorbed reflects to where there isn't any absorbion; your cars back seat and rear deck. That is way I mentioned the baffles on your rear deck speakers. Have you ever notice how a movie theater sounds so good when you are watching a movie? Next time, get to the movie kinda early with your girlfriend and take a look around when the lights are still on. You will see carpet even on the walls sometimes. If not carpet, check out those really thick curtains........
It's one or the other-

He laid the carpet from where his taillight covers were, up to where his back seat meets his trunk, but not up the back seat. He done his entire trunk that way. I mean, even I heard the difference between his and mines. I am running more power to my sub than he is ( I am pushing 600 mono to one 12 to his 400 stereo to two 10s)and he is kicking my tail in dbls in the cabin.

This is what I did to get rid of all the rattle. I had posted this a long time ago. Also I have a 5th gen.

First I would see if it's coming from the spot where the rear decklid meets the rear window. Turn up a song with bass and then stick you fingers between the window and the ****lid and see if the rattle goes away. If not what I did was

1. fold down the rear seats
2. pop off all the plastic push in holders along the black plastic trim.
3. Remove those and set aside
4. The rear decklid also has those pop in holders, so it pops up.
5. I dynamated everything except the holes where the pop in holders go
6. I put everything back together.
7. When everything is back together, keep the rear seats down
8. Have someone push DOWN the rear decklid so you can see where the pop in holders come down on the underside.
9. Put in a small screw horizontally thru the end of the pin. like this... the screw is the little line i drew and the V is the pop in holder -V like that.
This will hold it down, and will not let the pin pop up.
10. On my car most of the rattle came from the rear decklid hitting against the rear window. If this is the case, Buy thick weather stripping.
11. Apply weatherstripping at the point where the rear decklid and the window meet. Apply a long strip, from corner to corner. Squeeze it in there.
12. If rear light rattles, apply stripping between glass and 3rd light.
13. Let us know how it went.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to do this on Thanksgiving. Can you tell me more about step #9? Will the screw split the plastic "V" thing? What size screw?

So far I've got a few rolls of Peal & Seal (roofing stuff - from Lowes) and 2 sizes of foam weather stripping.

Thanks!

Jmax,

I got the egg crate stuff (from K-Mart) and it worked wonders! The only problem is that it was so thick that the deck lid wouldn't go down all the way. What I did was put the clips on the front and just let the side pillars hold the rest down. It looks fine because you can't tell that it is supposed to go down farther.

Just wanted to thank you for the idea. About 95% of my rattles have been solved!!!!! You rock! My next mission is to go after the trunk lid. The part behind my plate rattles like crazy (even without the plate on the car). Trust me, if I can shove egg crate in there I'll do it in a second. I'm also gonna Peal & Seal it (we recently did my friend's Accord) but the egg create is SOOOO much easier! And cheaper too ($9 for a layer to cover a twin size mattres! - leave off the last "s" for savings ).

Thanks again

Can you expand on this a little? I noticed that my rear bumper is making a lot of noise too. Here are some specific questions:

1) How do you get at the rear bumper to shove in the rags? Do you have to take it off?

2) Is there any chance that the rags will fall out?

3) Is there a possiblility that the rags can get wet and cause problems?

Thanks!

That is interesting that you actually stuffed the bumper. I havn't noticed mine being loose. But I pretty much never walk around the car with the stereo on. Did you remove the bumper cover? Or just slide rags in under a loose accessable portion? Weatherstripping may also be used to fill that area too.
