I plan to install some Focal KX165 mids and TN51 tweeter's this weekend, weather permitting. Just wanted some feeback on where some of you have found best tweeter placement to be in the Maxima. I can't do kick panels due to my 5speed and size 12 feet, and the fact that I use my dead pedal, so I plan to mount the mids in the factory door location. I have considered mounting the tweeters in the factory door locations, on the triangular piece back of the mirrors, on the trim piece between the windshield and side window, and on the kick panel trim piece. Just wondered if any of you had tried any of these locations, and what the results/benefits/disadvantages were. Any input appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input.

Here where I have my Dynaudio tweeters mounted

And it works out great. put them too far away from the woofer and you'll get a nasty seperation.

The soundstage is still at around the top of the dash, and sometimes I swear there are speakers in the sail panels, behind the side mirrors.

I had mine up on the sail panels... it worked ok, but my next major install, I'm doing either full or hybrid kick panel install (see below)

In the sail panels, there was never really a time when you could clearly say sound was pinpointable as coming from two separate spots. My problem with sail panels, though, is the difference in distance between the tweeter on the drivers side vs. the passenger side tweet.

Had I had an unlimited budget, I'd have done kick panels, but I always wanted to try this: the woofers in the stock door locations, and the tweets flush mounted down in the kick panels, therby being very close to the woofer. Since you're doing it yourself, why not give it a shot, with the woofers installed properly, and the tweeters temporarily mounted with double sided tape down in the kick panels? See if you like it.

Man it's scary when you find someone who thinks the same as you do. I already got somje plasti-tac to temporarily experiment with locations, but thought someone else might have already run that rabbit. I will try the various locations. I will be using a Premier DEX-P1R head unit which will do both time alignment and freq response correction, but my experience has been that the better you can get it to start with by speaker location and selection, the better the result will be. You can only compensate so much. Some of the lower mounting locations I've hear sound hollow due to the reflections off adjacent surfaces, sort of like cupping your hands around your ear or mouth, but the higher locations sound one-sided. Trial and error will be interesting. Actually I'm very impressed with the imaging of the BOSE with the stock tweeter locations. Tnaks for your input.

Yeah, going way back to one of my first cars, with 2 way coax 4 inch tweeters up in the kick panels... in spite of all the other problems with the setup, it did have great stereo imaging...

That's one of the locations I was going to suggest. to get a feel for the other get in the car - you can leave the door open. Look at the front lower edge of the door jam and come inside just a little. That way with the door shut it can still get a clear path to your ear. Try that spot also whether using tape, plumbers putty, tacky poster hanging stuff or whatever. Both left and right should have a clear path to your ear when you don't have a passenger. And depending on their foot placement it may still be clear - hint - keep the passenger seat back all the way.
