stereo question (electrical ?)

I have something draining my batt since like last oct, i have to disconnect the batt every nite, if i dont 2 days later batt is dead. My friend installed my stereo like 2 yrs ago, a year later i had this problem, just want a second opinion. The stereo is directly connected to the batt, can it b draining the batt?
My alternator went nuts one day and burned out fuses/switches/lites, fixed the alternator, replaced parts and the "short" appeared. mechanic couldnt find it, friend that put in the stereo had no idea.
no money yet to pay to diagnose it
ne one have ne ideas? similar prob? thankssssss for any input

My guess is that it is your stereo, If he connected directly to the battery. It is now getting constant power,so if you shut off your car, the stereo is still running. It should have been connected to your ignition switch........

by stereo, do you mean the headunit, or a whole system with subs and amps? Either way, unless you leave the system playing music overnight, it shouldn't drain your battery. Did you replace the battery to make sure that wasn't the problem?

Both, that is what the remote wire is for on the Amp. If you just hook it up to the battery, then the amp(s) would be on all the time. I'm sure that the h/u isn't wired directly to the battery though, because they would surely notice it being on even after the car was turned off. Especially when it doesn't stop playing. I don't know how much power it takes to run the amp(s) when there is no signal other than power going to them though. I would figure that it would just require enough power to run the LED, and I wouldn't think that would drain your battery in 2 days, but who knows...

I dont have any amps or subs. wish i did lol
but the radio face detachs, so it might kinda still be on, made sure i manually turn it off. replaced the batt, cause it was totally drained. had it checked its good, after i got a boost the batt was tested and it ran fine. it sux cause every time i disconnect the terminal gets dirty and have to clean it. How could i check if its the headunit? I dont talk to the guy who installed the radio, everytime he does something to my car, something terrible happens, im almost done w/school so i need something to do during the break. Anyone in Brooklyn/staten island, knows a good electrical guy? none of my extras work (auto seat belts, dimmer, speedo, tach, odo, door locks w/the key thing)because of the alt. I posted on the reg 3rd gen forum but they tell me to do the fuse thing, and the fuses are fine. help me girl out =)

I'm sorry to say this, but it sounds to me like you have to clue what you are talking about.

bklyngirl89 I don't think there is any way a headunit can be affecting your electrical system like that. If you want to take the time, just put the stock one back in, and see if it solves the problem.

Hook up a headunit directly to a battery and see what happens.

absolutely nothing, unless you forget to turn it off. Plus it all headunits hook up directly to the battery, for the memory function.

Are your idiot lights on? Like the battery light? Could be the alternator switch. Which could mean that it's simply wired backassward. Or it could be something with a bad ground draining your electrical system. Really about 3 million possible problems. But look to what was changed just before the problems started.

Also, name every item in the stereo install. The maker and model numbers. And how everything is wired. And the gauge and feet of wire for every items power and ground.

only the batt and engine idiot light work. the rest of the dash havent been the same. this problem started when the alternator blew (per my xmech) sending to much power to the parts, frying them. this happened a few months after the stereo install, the stereo was rewired

You could have something causing the drain in the gauge cluster. Or either of the switches on the steering column. I don't know how to test these myself. When your alt went bad it may have just been the regulator. In which case the voltage level probably blew your fuses. But it sounds like the fuses didn't blow fast enough to protect everything. If you have something that is burnt up in there it could drain the battery, and the alt while the engine is running. A simple 50 cent bad ground can burn out an alt. Unfortunately they are hard to diagnose and you may want to go to a Nissan dealer for proper diagnosis. Or a shop that specializes in alternators and electrical modifications. But a lot of the alternator shops do work on american cars exclusively. At least in Va that's how it is.
