thinking of getting xm radio
thinking of getting xm radio
well i want to get xm for my 99 max. however i still have the bose and plan on keeping it. now what are my options as far as gettig it wired up and working good?? and i hook it up like a cd-changer?? or do i need something else.
thanks
Cris

Yes you can hook it up like a cd-changer...its called FM-Modulated. This means that you can keep the Bose and have Sat radio. Although I have to say I highly recommend you get Sirius Satellite Radio instead. They have a Kenwood FM-Mod piece out that is sweet and it has a remote control. Sirius is the only one WITHOUT commercials..big plus if you are paying for a service.

Not really, partner. I have XM Radio and 90% of the stations are commercial free! These are the stations you pay for. The other 10% are free stations, so they have about 30 seconds worth of commercials every hour and a half! Whether or not you choose Sirrus or XM, it a damn good investment. I don't know how much Sirrus costs monthly, but I pay 44.00 every 3 months with XM. They even have it so you can pay 105.00 for the enitre year (that's a once a year payment)! I drove from Alabama to Seattle,WA. without a single blackout, even in the Rocky Mountain passes. I just hope I can catch a XM satelite signal when my car gets in Germany!
I have XM in my car now, and I would definitely get sirius in a heartbeat. Sirius has a lot more variety in music versus XM. The only reason, I'm w/ XM right now, is b/c I have an alpine hu which is XM ready. Once alpine picks up sirius, I'm definitely moving over. I hear sirius everyday at work, and it's worth it.
well im not sure if i want sirius or XM yet but my mane thing is getting it working. i do not want to replace the bose as that will cost to much money for everything. how would i go about wiring this dude uP??
thanks

XM has two models one has a FM modulator (someone mentioned that already) and a headunit link cable (mines is an IP-Bus). With the FM Modulator, all you have to do is connect the power & ground (I think the other wire is illumination or remote, can't remember) and plug the modulator between the headunit and the antenna cable, set the station to 89.1 FM, and it'll play, providing you have the XM satellite antenna (from Trek, Sony, Pioneer, you know the rest). They are seperate from the XM reciever. They cost about 70 bucks, but if you get the Trek antenna, you can get a rebate of 30 dollars.
so i guess w/ the bose in my 99 max, i have to use that fm modulator, as there is no way to dirrectly connect the xmreceiver to the bose.
ok here is another question, i was just at best buy and i saw some of the receivers i guess u call them (the things that display the song/title) and they were like 130, now i also still need the antenna, and the XM box, or do those receivers i think they are come w/ the box so all i need is the antenna then?
thanks
Cris

Are you looking at the plug and play units, like the sony and delphi units? The delphi comes w/ everything you need. The receiver is 130 the the car kit is another 70 that has your antenna and everything you need to connect it to your car. If you are looking at the alpine and pioneer units. You just buy those units and an antenna.
Yeah. When I bought the Pioneer XM Radio, it came with the reciever, and the display (I didn't have the XM ready headunit at the time). Then, I had to buy the Trek antenna. I don't like the way Sony did the FM Modulated version of the XM Radio, but I went to Circuit City and now they have the XM ready headunits, recievers, and antennas. you'd still have to buy the antenna seperately. I am planning to move my antenna inside the car, on the rear deck. Seen one of the members car with that setup, and it works.
i was looking at the delphi units. does that come w/ everything i need except the antenna?? then i just need to find the antenna, wire it up according to the instrucions, call up XM and im done right??
thanks

TEchnologically speaking . . .
Sirius is the better format. It was late to the party b/c of money and management issues, but it's downright better. XM radio has thousands of repeater stations on the ground to make for the not so ideal orbit of XM radio satellites. Sirius Radio, on the other hand, has 75 repeaters on the ground, and that's all it needs to cover the entire continental US.

Like I mentioned before, I only pay 44.00 bucks every three months. I think that XM is better, more stations are comming online just about evert two months. Just discovered a new station today called Studio 67 (something like that) it is a slow jams station. I listed to Jazz, Hip Hop, and Club music, so I don't channel surf that much. If I did, I would probally find more....
Unlike Sirrus, XM maybe can be picked overseas.........let me hope so,if not, I would have to listen to German.

Has anybody installed a Delphi unit yet? I can't figure out where to mount the reciever. I put one in my Expedition but I have a lot more room for install in the truck. Our 96 Maxima doesn't seem to have any good place to install. Pics would be nice too. Thanks for any info.
Check the groop deal section. Cause until 12\31 if you sign up for Sirius with a years service at $13 a month, you'll get the Kenwood tuner, FM modulator, and antenna for FREE!!!!!!!!! At least 6 of the org members have signed up for it!

I just bought the Delphi unit. I have the antenna inside the car, attached to one of my rear speakers. I get the full reception here in Texas. I am using the cassette converter to connect to my Bose unit. I really wish the bose had an AUX port...

Those Delphi units are quite honestly too big for in-dash installments.
But from what I've seen they have more functions than my Pioneer XM display. Maybe if you can manage to install in the arm rest compartments.... Do the newer maximas have the armrest compartments still?

My 96 does. I have my Delphi unit attached to my dash though. Its tilted towards me and I think its works pretty good there, at least for now. The only problem is that I have to use the tape attachment. I could do the radio signal modulator, but I've heard that the sound quality is no better, and sometimes worse.

Since you have a 99, you won't even need the antenna adapters. Nissan uses "FM Diversity" antennas in their cars. What this basically means is that there are 2 antennas instead of one. It helps with signal strength.
Now, for the good stuff... you can tap ONE of the antennas. The antenna in the trunk is a standard antenna with a standard antenna adapter. Here's how:
Open the trunk of your car. Look to the right where the spare jack is stored. Remove it. Reach your hand inside the hole and forward just a bit. You should be near the base of the antenna. There is a wire coming off the antenna itself. About 3-6" down that wire, there is a connector. Disconnect it. Insert your FM modulator there. Reconnect the antenna to the FM modulator. Reconnect the antenna wire from the HU to the FM modulator. Enjoy (with no antenna adapters).

Oh really? So that explains why I saw two antenna leads instead of one when I first pulled out my factory stereo! It is weird though, cause my car is a 86.

Gundam, to answer to, XM DOES NOT work overseas and neither does Sirius. I dont know who has fed you false information. It boils down to this guys: Sirius is the premium service, it has better programing, no commercials but costs a couple bucks a month extra. And XM is good too but has commercials, and they will have more when more people start subscribing, thats the way it works. Trust me on this one....

I know XM doesn't work overseas.... I just wished it did! It was told to me that there is another XM format (I don't know the name of it there) overseas and that I would have to sign up there. I don't know if it exists there, and I'm not telling everyone that it does. If you go to www.clubxm , you will see that both XM and Sirus are having either repeater problems (sirus) and satelitte drop outs (xm).
The dropouts are due to people mounting them inside on their rear decks and then tint their windows. I don't know why Sirus are having dropouts, From what I heard for that site, is that there aren't enough repeater stations. If you look into it further, you'll also find out that some airlines are starting to add XM on Domestic flights only. (I have to clarify that DOMESTIC FLIGHTS ONLY) As far as overseas receptiong goes: haven't seen antything on the web as of yet, but you know it will soon be.
Just to make sure what I said....
As far as the commercial on the free stations as opposed to suscribed stations:
note: "the stations you pay for........"
As far as getting XM overseas:
As you can see, I said, "HOPE"...................
But I guess you were right, sometimes I gotta clarify what I say, 'cause people can easily get confused...
