Adding a sub and an amp

I have a 2k non-bose system and I want to keep the old HU but want to add a sub and an amp for some low end bass. Should I...

1. Buy a mono amp that takes speaker level inputs and splice into the back speaker wires for the sound input.
2. Buy a 4-channel amp and cut the front speaker wires and route them to the amp. Then I can drive the front speakers with 2 channels and bridge the other 2 channels to drive the sub.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

BTW, I just installed an FM modulated CD/MP3 changer (Sony 565, I think). It's awesome. I can put about 60 albums in the changers and never run out music. The sound quality is about the best FM station not CD quality but because I played MP3 on it, you couldn't tell the difference. Let me know if you need more info the the CD/MP3 changer
