bose sub in my new 01 sounds awful! Please help!

Hello,

I purchased an 01 Maxima GLE yesterday with the Bose system. The system as a whole sounds wonderful (and I really like the car, too) but the subwoofer sounds awful. If I listen to soft rock with the bass level at 0, it sounds fine. But if I listen to something like rap at bass level 0, it sounds awful (I think it's a really bad rattling) or if I listen to any music with a + bass level, it sounds awful. Again, I think it's a rattling, but it could be a blown sub. I doubt it's blown because it sounds good at low volume/low bass music/0 bass level.

I looked through the past 3 pages of posts and didn't see any information on other problems like this. So.....does the sub just sound really bad, or is there a problem with my car? It sort of sounds like the whole trunk and rear deck is rattling... I can't imagine that a $1000 Bose system would sound worse than the basic factory system in the '98 Neon that I just traded in

Please help me if you have any information on how to fix this problem if it is a problem (and I sure hope this isn't normal!).
Thank you,

Douglas Hughey

Doug,

It is possiblethat the sub IS blown. At low volumes there is a loweer distortion rate and less current traveling to the speaker than at higher volumes/gains with bass.

Many of the people on here dont keep their Bose long enough to complain alot of them just rip it out and start new with aftermarket products, this may be the reason for not seeing to many posts on the topic.

Thanks for the advice, Don. I hope I can come up with a CHEAP solution to this, whether it's a blown sub (hopefully under warranty) or extreme vibration (also hopefully under warranty). I have an Infinity Basslink that I plan to put in soon, as long as I can get the connection going, so barring all else, I guess I could just unplug the Bose sub.

Thanks again for the help,

Douglas

The sub in my '01 rattled too. I took the cover off to find that only three of the four corners were bolted down. I had to drill a hole in the fourth corner in order to install the fourth bolt but now all is tight. You can also see this from underneath. Turn up the music and get in the trunk and look under the sub. Good luck.
