Sound dampening question

This is a question for people who have dampened there trunk and cut MDF in the to give the trunk a flat surface instead of using the warped masonite. Do you put sound dampening on the bottom of the MDF wood (not the box) that you cut the same shape as your rug? Also do you secure the MDF wood surface (not the box) to the car with something or is it just sitting on top of the sound dampening material? If so what dp you use to secure it?

I put the sound deadining in the tire well.

I used MDF and put foam on the bottom as to not mess up the deadening material. I put it under the MDF with adhesive spray glue.

Little to no vibrations from here.

Hope this helps.

when you guys say MDF... do you mean the sound dampening stuff they use for roofing?? If so... what brand did you get and where? I am considering doing this for the tirewells and stuff but i have heard that it will smell like tar when the temprature is hot?

any input on that? Thanks.

o yea 1 more thing, when you guys put it in the tirewell... did you put it on top (interior cabin) or underneath the tirewell side (outside).

MDF = a type of compressed wood people use for building sub enclosures.

Peel and seal - a cheap alternative material to dynamat for sound dampening. You can buy it at Loews I believe.

Used "egg crate foam" for beds. You can get it for cheap, aroung $15, at a k-mart or target. Get the twin size and you should be fine.

When the instal is done, you will not even see it under there.

Good luck.

well

that could be a problem. My box just barely fits height wise. If I put egg crate foam I don't think it will be able to fit. damn

The box will fit. It is foam after all. Worth a try.

Peel & Seal can be purchased at a local Lowe's Home Improvement.

Good luck guys.

do you guys have pictures of installing these sound deadening materials on the trunk lid?

thats where i get the most rattles,

I was told to put foam in the trunk lid behind the M A X I M A emblems does this make a mess?

and what kind of expansion foam?

Peel and seal is a cheap alternative. The only drawback is that it stinks like no other. When it heats up it stinks even more. MDF= Medium Density Fiberboard. It's compressed a lot more than cheap particle board and you shouldn't need to put any dampening on top or bottom. The expansion foam we used for the trunk lid was Great Stuff and can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot. Automotive expansion foam is best but can be pricey. As long as you dont put any expansion foam behind the lock you should be fine.

Man, this thread just keeps going. There are hundreds of posts on deadening. It's really not tough, try some things out, tons of options work just fine

well

well unfortunately sound dampening is pretty permanent, and its not that cheap. If I go experiment and it doesn't work out well, then I am ****ed. Thats why I asked questions. You don't have to answer or even read the thread if you don't want, and neither does anyone else, but I think that this is what the org is here for: To learn and help each other out, no matter if it takes 1 reply or 1 hundred. i mean I am sure I am not the only one out there thats looking for this info and since the search its hard to find other threads, unless you spend hours upon hours reading, which I for one don't feel like doing.
