weird amp problem

after shortly hooking up the wires to my amp/sub combo to test they work okay, i've run into a weird situation that's got me stumped. i turn on my car and i can get bass going through my subs. however, when i turn the gain past a certain point on the amp, it just emits this tremendously loud signal until i turn the gain back down. i noticed the loud signal goes higher and lower depending on what i've got the bass eq set at. i dunno what kind of a difference that should make and why. i have an mtx 6500d mono sub amp and two infinity kappa perfect 12s (i've only got one hooked up right now while testing). anyone have a clue as to why my amp would be doing this??

what is your input source to the amp and how is it grounded?

it's source is the rcas from the receiver, and is grounded from the same spot as my 4-channel amp that is (which is working fine...). i blew a fuse, so i can't check it until tomorrow when i buy another. however, i'm gonna try the front/rear rca inputs to the sub amp and see if that changes things (probably not, but who knows).
