is it possible to put 5x7s in a 4x6 slot in my 89 max. the 4x6's there now are on like a plastic cut out. would it just be a matter of drilling new holes for screws or would i have to cut that plastic or the surrounding metal?

go for 6.5s

just make a plate with a spacer. by and large they are better speakers.

Easy.

Remove the plastic factory bracket. Use this as a emplate on a 1/2" or 3/4" sheet of MDF or plywood to make a cutout the for the door opening, mark and drill holes to fit in the factory hole locations on the door. Then cut out the opening for the 6.5" speaker in the baffle you just fabricated.
