SPL and SQ

I am looking at subs right now and I was wondering what was the difference between SPL and SQ? I want a sub that really hits and I was wondering what subs dose everyone have that is on the Org.

SPL stands for sound pressure level, it is basically a system which is designed for loudness. Like those booty shakin bass rides that you hear a mile away. SQ is a system that is focused on sound quality and has a very crisp sound which doesnt make your ears bleed. I'm currently running 2 Kenwood 10s firing through the ski/trunk access hole. Needless to say, I'm more SQ. However, I STILL can crank it up and get looks.

JL Audio

My 2 cents. JL's all the way. SPL or SQ they're the way to go.

JLs are decent subs, but I think you have to be a bit more speciffic as to which ones you are referring to. 12W3s sound decent and perform well with little power. Whereas W7s will definitely make some noise if you feed them well enough. Honestly though, while I do like JL's lower end models, I wasn't too impressed with the w7 series. I have heard those subs in several installs in various configurations, and they never sounded as accurate as I would have hoped. Considering they run about $500 for a single 12" I would look elsewhere first.

if you want the best, in my opinion, Image Dynamics V3 in any size.

Image Dynamics are nice subs. Not much to look at if you are going strictly for looks, but they do sound great. And if the new IDMAX series is better then the IDQs, they are definitely worth checking out.

SPL systems are designed to produce the most sound pressure level at a certain frequency. Most competitors will port at the resonant frequency of their vehicle. In a max, this is around 65 hz. This produces the most sound pressure yet sounds like junk. SQ systems can be done one of 2 ways. Port at 1/2 res freq and you get that brain shaking bass. Or you can port at a slightly higher frequency to catch a better slope. SQ competitions vary greatly from SPL competitions. SQ competitions revolve around putting in a test cd and your system being able to play all frequencies without a "gap" in the music. Hope this helps.

Stereo Integrity's Magnum D2 is also a nice subwoofer for the price. This company will become popular one day... just like I was talking about Adire Audio's Brahma a year ago. NOW everyone's talking about it after Tom Nousaine's great review of it in last month's Mobile Entertainment I'd get either one over a 12w7.

I like Image Dynamics a bit as well, but as for all you ID fans, how can you not like the W7? I personally dont, but considering ID made it, why not?

Yes, Image Dynamics IDQ series, Adire Brahma, Elemental Designs E-O series, or Infinity Perfect.
