Replace 96 Bose HU with a different year?

Replace 96 Bose HU with a different year?
The cd players in my 96 Bose HU doesn't work, i only get the "err" message. It should be possible but I want to double check. Can I use a Bose HU from a 97 to 99? What other years would work? Thanks
