I've always heard that is sounds best when fired towards the rear of the car.

best way to know is to go out and try each setup to see how you like it. firing towards the front tends to be more accurate while firing towards the rear more boomy. plus it's a bit louder if you fire towards the rear.

Actually I've heard the opposite. Fire towards rear is more accurate and forward is boomy. Something to do with the length of the wave and the distance it travels to your ear, I dunno. But I agree, just try each one and see how it sounds to you. Then go with the best one. Who knows, maybe your particular sub in your car will sound best to you while firing up

does your system seems louder with your windows down? 'cause on mine, it sounds a bit deeper with the windows down.

Yes, I've always figured it had to do with the air pressure or something. So I always bumb with the windows down.

I have a 15" solo baric L5 and it sounds a lot better facing the back of the trunk. Also the closer I have it sitting toward the back, the better it sounds.

Pointing the sub towards the rear can give you a DB increase due to boundary effects and can increase SPL by as much as +6db. This benefit is limited to frequencies in which the distance from the driver to the boundary is less than 1/10th of a wavelength. So, in a Maxima, dependant on the box and location of the sub, you would have 2' +/- from cone to the back of the trunk which means the increase will effect frequencies where sound waves are 20' which is around the 70hz range ( 20hz propagates in 56.6ft and 100hz at 11.32ft ).

Pointing the sub into the cabin negates any of these gains...Of course, the car would probably be quieter since you won't have a sub trying to blow off the trunk
