factory speaker replacement - 95 NON-Bose

hey, i've got the NON-BOSE stock head unit and the 4 stock speakers that came in my 95SE. they sound "okay" - passable for FM/AM, and no i don't use cassettes. but i'm considering upgrading to a cd/mp3 unit and better spakers for longer drives. and to further clarify, i listen to mostly acoustic music (75% JAZZ, a little classical, and a little "classic rock" - hey, i'm a jazz musician in my...ahem...early 40s) so i have no interest in a "massive subwoofer, 1500 watt, it-go-thump-so-loud-every-car-within-1-block-can-FEEL-it" system. just decent sound from the stock head unit and its' eventual cd/mp3 replacement.

to those of you who have replaced the stock speakers (which look like 6 1/2 in., right???) with upgrades of the same size - just wondering your experiences. and yes, i'll make the choice by LISTENING to them myself, so i'm not asking "what should i buy?".

also, has anybody got the new sattleite rig yet? i'm sure it works okay on news/talk/sports - just like my AM does. but how does it sound ON MUSIC? and are there EVER ANY reception problems?

again, just looking for your real-world experience here folks.

thanks in advance...

I just did this last weekend. 6 3/4" speakers all around.
I picked up a panasonic head unit and some 40 watt rms kenwood 3-way speakers from crutchfield.com. Fits perfect and sounds great with some dynomat under the speakers. Check out there site, there installation directions are excellent.

My stock speakers were suffering from a bad case of dry-rot. I upgraded the fronts to 6 3/4" Pioneer 2-ways from Crutchfield. The install directions they give you are great. I recently purchased similar Pioneer speakers for the rear from Wal-Mart but I haven't had time to install them. Also, my head unit is an 8 year old Pioneer that still works just fine.

has anybody got the new sattleite rig yet?
I got XM factory installed in my wife's '04 Maxima. Sound quality is much better than cassette or FM but a step below CD. I'll probably get the Dephi Ski-Fi Roady when it's release next month.

i've also checked out crutchfields and wondered...what is the original spec "cutout" size - and does it matter as long as you're getting a 6 3/4 inch.

one more q - saw a link somewhere on this forum. do i REALLY have to take off the door panels and rear deck to replace factory speakers? some one PLEASE tell me the little grills just pop off...

You really have to take the door panels and rear deck off. The instructions are in this thread. I'd also get a "panel popper" from your local auto parts store or Crutchfield. It makes it a little easier to get the doors off. It took around 45 minutes to get the first door panel off but I was really careful. The other door panel took about 5 minutes.
