Alarm Recomendations

Since I am now attending University and my car will be left out in the open a lot longer and in a whole new area, I decided now is the time for an alarm. But problem is I know nothing about alarms and I didn't want to go to a shop and ak about it in case they would just sell me the most expensive one they have because I wouldn't know what features to look for. So what I would like is a pager, but if not thats ok, one with good range, and any other features you guys think would be useful so please any recomendations would be great, thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like you really want the protection and not all the gizmos. I would actually recommend getting a fairly inexpensive viper or alpine alarm system, and then add on a back up battery, pager, and a good hoodpin switch. Once these are in place, you will be very secure. A back up battery siren isn't a bad idea either. Also something to make your car sound different like air horns, or piezo sirens in the dash, so that it doesn't sound like a basic piece of crap that nobody pays attention to.
