i have a question about some hi temp mastic, undercoating, and quiet kote that i'm going to be installing. i'm hoping sweetsound2001 can help me out on this seeing that he's the guru on sound deadening. I have 4 32"x54" sheets of high temp mastic from McMaster Carr and two cans of quiet kote damping spray and rubberized undercoat. I was wondering if i should be concentrating on any one area of the car or just applying a little everywhere seeing that i'm using so little material. i don't have a major system just 4 speakers and a 12" JL. it would seem that i should just concentrate on the two front doors since the speakers are in the doors and it might cut down on some noise but i'm not sure if it will help if i do the rear deck and trunk lid too at the expense of less damping in the doors. any input would be greatly appreciated.

The doors are good for isolating speaker noise issues but the floor and fire wall are where most road and engine noise enters.

ok. first of all, what is your main goal? to reduce engine noise or to make your speakers sound best? are you running subs? it seems that you have way too little material to do the entire vehicle so i concentrate on the doors, rear deck and trunk lid. also, if youre gonna do the floor, just buy really thick carpet padding and put it under factory carpet, that will help more than any hi-temp mastic can and it will be cheaper. you can get some stuff that i used called heat shield from http://www.jcwhitney.com just do a search for heat shield. if doing the doors, make sure you lay mastic on the inner part of the door, the one that is closest to the outside of the car. and spray undercoat in hard to reach spots. adding heat shield also helps in the doors. hope this helps

questions...

hey sweetsounds2001,
I have about 18 square feet of wanna be dynamat extreme and I was wondering how much MORE I need, or what should I get for sound deadening on the floor. I'm sure the 18 square feet will cover the doors and trunk lid, but I want to get rid of some road noise. Any help is much appreciated!!

don't use dynamat extreme on the floor. trust me on this. just buy some really thick carpet padding if you really want to reduce road noise, and look into getting your car sprayed with rubberized undercoat. im getting that done next month. make sure that your factory carpet will still fit back on top of padding as it has sound deadening glued to underside of the carpet already.

Is it ok to use Dynamat Extreme on the doors and trunklid? I was looking at the "heat shield" products you were referring to at JC Whitney and it looks pretty good. About the "thick carpet padding" is that the heat shield material you are referring to? Anyway, thanks for all your help!

yes..the heat shield i used is good. they also have alittle bit more expensive variation of it which is sandwiched with fiberglass in the middle. thats even better. but the thicker the carpet padding, the better will be its noise stopping capabilities. for doors, trunk and etc use hi-temp mastic or similar materials. i personally would not spend the money for dynamat extreme unless its going to be used for headliner, which is exactly what im gonna use for headliner because xtreme sticks the best.

my friend has some dynamat extreme he's letting me use so I think I'm going to use that for headlining. Should I get some other insulator for the remaining space in the doors? Will that benefit in only sound deadening or both deadening and SQ? Anyway, how thick of heat shield can I apply underneath the carpet so it will still fit? I don't want to get 1 1/2 inch and figure out that my carpet won't fit...hehe . Thanks

i would say dont go more than 1/2 on inch. even at that it will be a little tough to put the carpet back on.

About how much of the heat shield ( feet ) would you need to do the trunk of the Max ?? What about the other stuff on JC Witney, with the foam and vinyl lining....Which stuff is better for doing the trunk...I was thinking about just using some of the fiberglass insulation and some noise killer spray for the door panels.........Good Idea or no ??
