Amplifying your regular speakers

Why do you do it? Is it necessary? I just amplified the 10 inch sub in the back. And it sounds nice; I like it. What is it about giving amperage to the 6.5s when they do their job anyway? Does it make it to where you dont need to turn your speakers up as loud? Please enlighten me. Plus Ive always thought what if I did this.
