Starting system and question on componet vs. Coaxial

Hey Guys,

I am wanting to start a system very soon and dont have a huge amount of money to spend as I am a graduate student that gets paid crap. anyways, I was lookin to upgrade my front and rear speakers and was lookin into 6 1/2 coaxial all the way through and wasnt sure how the sound quality was compared to the compnet systems. Also, was thinkin of addin a amp eventually when I get the money. Have an Alpine CDA-7995 HU.

Also, are there any brands you usually recomend for quality or is it more of personal prefference?

Yea, what's up with being paid crap, as I am a fellow grad student as well, hehe. It all depends on your pocketbook. Brands that seem to be relatively inexpensive, and popular among maxima owners on here atleast, are Infinity, and that's about it. Once you get up in price brands start popping out like Image Dynamics, Focal, Eclipse, and CDT.

Components will typically sound better than a coax setup, but both are decent options. If you do decide to go components, you will probably need a dedicated amp for them. The head unit is not quite powerful enough to really push them.

Well I actually decided to go with both. Unfortunately I didn't go with Infinity because I get a better deal with JBL GTOs. I got component 6.5 for the front and I got 6.5 coaxils for the rear. I have a Directed 250watt 4-channel amp to power them. My pockets are tight too so I haven't gotten the HU yet. I'll let u know how it sounds when I get them installed.

Yeah, since the Max has tweeters in the A pillar up front, it's usually better to go with components up front and coaxials in the rear. You can still get great sound from coaxials all around, but it will affect the sound stage up front. I never understood why Nissan put the rear speakers in the doors as opposed to the rear deck. And I understand what you guys are going through with little or no money, but I would suggest getting some key quality components which you can use in the Max and future cars. When I traded in my accord for the Max, I took my system out of the accord and plan on putting it in my Max soon.

Some brands that I really like include:
Kenwood (headunit, amps, never tried the speakers)
Alpine (headunit, amps, never tried the speakers)
Infinity (speakers, love the kappas)
JL Audio (great subs)
Diamond Audio (good speakers for the money)

Even if you have to go with a less expensive product, I would try to find brands that make quality products...much better in the end.
Good luck.

You're wrong about messing up the sound in the front from speakers in the back, you just have to match your levels correctly.

I think the reason nissan put the speakers in the rear doors was to make them sound a little better. The door plays almost like an enclosuse, where as the trunk is just too big. Plus, when you put a sub in the trunk the base doesn't interfere with the speakers, which is a good thing. Also, get components. If you can't afford the rear speakers, dont get them yet. Get better front one.
Also, my 2K GXE didn't come with housing for the tweeters... what a shame!

I would also like to add in that JL Audio makes some mighty fine component and coaxial speakers. I really like mine!!

the Alpine CDA-7995 does not have an internal amplifer, so in order to hear anything you need amps

No one said anything about messing up the sound in the front. It'll just sound different if you use components as opposed to coaxials because of the location of the tweeters...

If you go coaxial, I highly recommend Focal HC series. They sound about as good as a coax can get, and even better than many components.
