Anyone using Eclipse aluminum sub(s)?

I just wanted to hear some opinions on Eclipse aluminum subs.

Particularly the SW8122DVC if anyone is using one or two. What kind of box (sealed, ported, vented...) what do you like/dislike?

Thanks

chris

Hey, Don...

what about in a vented box?

what are the pros and cons?

I usually run sealed (my 10w3 is in a sealed box), but the place I talked to has a certain vented box (has a slot and a chamber inside) that they use for this sub.

thanks

Slick...I dont use a website as most of the brands I carry do not allow online sales.

Red..In a vented you will get more bass, but less accuracy. Vented boxes are primarily more for SPL not SQ.

OK, I got the eclipse sw8122DVC in the vented box (they made me a deal I couldn't pass up). So far it sounds very good, but they said to be easy on it during a two hour "break in" period, so I haven't really hammered on it. I can tell that the bass, especially with rock, isn't quite as crisp, but it's not that noticeable.

It is a DVC 3 ohm x 2, but it's running so that that they are dropped down to 1.7 ohms and using more current out of my amp. I will say that running it "easy" blows the freaking doors off of my JL 10w3.

Whoever installed/sold it to you misinformed you. The 8122DVC is 4Ohm + 4Ohm, if wired in parallel then you are receiving a 2Ohm load. This is fine, but why he would tell you different is beyond me. Eclipse goes through ALOT of great lengths and training to make sure their dealers know what they are selling.

Also the break in period will take a bit longer than that, depending on what you listen to and at what level. In a sealed box your bass will be alot more accurate.

If you dont me asking...what was the "deal" they offered and the dimensions/frequency of the box they built.

I dont know about that, ive heard too many different point of veiws about breaking subs in. Some of the OG members on www.caraudioforum.com say just push sub down to nearly its limit and push it back out to near its limit and its broken it Personally, im waiting a solid 2 days, it alls well, ill hammer it.

Btw, how heavy are the Alum drivers? 12" & 15"? 50-60lbs im gessing?

I was standing right next to the store owner (he's this older guy that is really an electronics person -- not a kid at circuit city) and it showed up at exactly 1.7 ohms on the meter when he tested it after it was wired. He showed me the wiring diagram of everything they did and I gave him the specs for my amp (since it's a pretty old amp). My amp is stable down to 1 ohm and the way they set it up, he said I would be getting the most out of my amp, as well as the speaker. Maybe I misunderstood him, as I am not that much of an electronics engineer! I am positive that he knew exactly what he was doing.

The box wasn't custom built by them, but they said that it would produce considerably more SPL than a sealed box with some loss in SQ. Obviously, it won't be as "perfect" as a sealed box, but I do like the sound pretty well and I'm definitely not disappointed.

If I am not happy with it, I can replace the enclosure with a sealed one, as long as there is no damage to the current one. I don't have the paperwork handy (it's filed in my garage) but I think it is an Obcon chambered enclosure and I have no idea of the frequency range it is tuned for. The place is an authorized Eclipse dealer and I know they have been selling Eclipse as long as I've lived here (over 3 years). They also sell RF, JL, Kenwood, Alpine and some others I can't remember right now. It's a small family-run business that has been around for decades and is very reputable locally.

I paid $249 for the sub (new in box w/warranty and all paperwork) and $51 for the enclosure (I think they had it listed at $99). They did all of the wiring (Phoenix Gold wires) and installed everything for free.

Sorry I don't have pics, but I loaned out my digicam.

Thanks a lot for your help, Don. I just want to make sure I am getting this done right. I wasn't really planning on getting a new sub so soon, but things just happen...

once i heard the eclipse aluminums, i jumped on then, and love them more n more ev day... they are extremely loud, they dont distort at extreme levels like other subs... im running a sealed box, i think 1.5 per sub... sounds amazing... ported would be louder, but requires a much bigger box as well... you can view pics on my homepage...

i love my 2 10" aluminums however I had a problem with the cone constantly crumpling and seperating, 6 times to be exact, now I'm putting in 2 12's and hoping it doesn't do the same.
