Subwoofer(s) in the rear deck
Subwoofer(s) in the rear deck
Okie folks, I'm sure that this has been asked before or possibly even beat down to a pulp. I would very much like to ditch my conventional subwoofer box in favor of something not as space occupying. I'm currently running just a single 12w0, as I'm not a big bass head (well not anymore)
I've been playing with the idea of getting rid of the 12 for either 2 eights or 1 10 and wanted to mount it in the rear deck.
What are the obstacles that I would face with doing such a thing. I've already considered the torsion bars for the trunk and that is as good as solved. Any strutural issues that I should worry about?
Also any references/pictures that anyone can show me would be greatly appreciated.

I just mounted 6x9's on the deck in place of the 6 an 1/2's and it was alittle bit of a *****.... I wouldn't recommened trying to cut out holes for 8's and i don't think theres enough room for more than 1 10 in the dead center + you would need a free air sub, which is hard to find AND cost more.... And lastly theres those 2 bars that go across your trunk that i guess have something to with it staying open when you lift it, no idea, but there in your way if you try to put anything bigger than 6x9's back there, you might wanna just try 6x9's in place of your 6 1/2 back there that will improve the sound alot without too much bass, dunno just an idea... hope this helps
i just put 2 eights in boxes (not subs, but eights nonetheless) in my rear deck, so w/ a third gen its possible...nothing bigger will fit tho, even 1 ten in the middle which wouldnt b a good idea b/c u lose the trunk light then...i got a rstb so i dont have 2 worry about structural things either....just buy sum good snips and go 2 town!

I've been thinking of doing this with my 5th Gen as well. I dont have bose so the rear deck is empty of all speakers. I'd say a free air 10" should be more than enough to add a little bass to the car. I've never really looked into it before but if anyone had an idea of how to make it happen i'd be all ears.
Check out my homepage. I did (2) JL audio 8W3v2's in a sealed enclosure underneath my back deck. Sounded great. Removed to add amp rack ander back deck and (2) JL 10W6v2's. If you want more info, let me know.

I'm not sure about a 4th gen, but I briefly considered putting a 10" in IB under the rear shelf. It's possible, but you would have to completely seal the inside of the trunk from the passenger compartment. It's a pain, but doable. Also, if you've already figured out what to do with the torsion bars, then that's half the battle.
Also, TONS of companies make IB subs. Oz Audio makes some of the best.
And if it helps, I made a tiny box in an aperiodic enclosure with two 10s in my 5th gen. Once again, you have to completely seal the front/back. I lost the ability to use the rear seats as a pass-through for long objects, but the box is so small I virtually have full trunk space for storage.
Here's a pic of the box. There's more install pics on my home page, page 7.

Tony,
Just wanted to comment on your system, looks great. I finished my enclosure for my (2) JL 10w6v2's this weekend and will be installing this coming weekend. I have them firing into the back of the seat similar to your AP enclosure. The weight of the enclosure was heavy so I wasn't able to secure it like yours and had to build a false 20" x 6" floor to secure it to (Also secured at the top of enclosure like yours). I'll be posting picks soon of the complete install. For those interested I also installed 5 1/4 in the rear deck for fill. The back doors just weren't doing it for me.

No comparison as far as rear feel. Really made a difference in video mode. I personally like having rear feel though were some don't. I should have all pics up by Saturday. Waiting on carpet to come in to cover enclosure. I saw your post about your Q-forms, how well did the color match? Would sure like to see a pic of the passenger side also.

Rear fill is an interesting thing for me. Some cars I've had sound excellent with it and others did not sound good at all. I've been playing around with the rear speakers with my current setup. Surprisingly, it sounds pretty good at just the right level...makes the soundstage seem larger than ever. Don't know if I'll keep them...we'll see. I'm not done tweaking yet!!

Ola! What's the scoop, bro?
My friend installed my system for me... well actually I helped him somwehat. It took us 9 full hours!
Anywayz, he does professional custom work on the side, as he used to own his own shop back in the day. (Network Engineer fulltime nowadayz)
I'm sure he can build you the perfect solution... but I dunno what the cost $$$ would be. He would probably hook you up. He setup my amp completely stealth (where your have yours, only on the inside). He also works with fiberglass, mdf, and the rest.
Hit me up on the CL sometime. Good luck with the project!!!
