Rear Deack Rattles

I've got a set of 10" subs in my 01 Max and my rear deck rattles like crazy even when it's not turned up that much. I remember a post way back about dampining it but I cant find it. How can I Dynomat my rear deck? And will it help?

I just dealt with this yesterday, so thought I would reply. I had two 12's put in Fri. The stupid guys there didn't unplug the stock sub, even though they told me they did. I specifically asked them to do so, because A.) they were already going to be up in there, and B.) that was where I believed all the "rattling" to be originating from. I spent a long time putting in Dynamat, tied up several things in the trunk (metal bars criss-crossing the rear deck in trunk, not sure what they are), and pulling the back seat almost entirely out looking for more rattle culprits. Could not figure out why I still heard these freakin rattles. The same ones I have heard since day 1 of buying the car (it was "pre-owned" . Then I noticed the idiots who installed the new Alpine subs did not disconnect the original Bose sub, even though they reported to me that they did. Once I did that, all the rattles stopped. It was crazy because I think it was something to do with the sub itself. Not that the sub was causing something else in the car to rattle, but it was making the noise itself. Whatever the cause, good ridance as far as I am concerned.

I would try doing the same, disonnecting the Bose sub. You really don't need it now that you have two 10's anyway. There are little conncetors used to connect the signal, to the sub. They come right off, and can be put right back on if you so desire.

Man, I never knew just how freakin crazy those stupid rattles were making me, until I put in the new equipment, put Dynamat in the whole thing, tightened everything down, and they were still there. I thought I was going to have a coronary.

Good luck!

I didn't have a Bose sub in mine. I bought it, pre-owned, without the Bose system. The carpeted part of the rear deck is literally vibrating. I think the deck is loose and I don't know how to tighten it. It seems more loose around the back end by the rear glass. What would be a good solution to stop air from shaking the rear deck?

Hmmmm........ Well, what I did before I put down Dynamat (betwen the rear deck and metal that supports it), is folded a small terry cloth (sp?) towel up, and stuffed it in the farthest part of the rear deck, between it, and the window. That tamed it down some, but not all the way. I could also always see the white towel in the rear view mirror, and it bugged me. So, I recently took some of the remaining Dynamat and folded it up, and stuffed it back there just like I did the towel. That seems to be working.

What you need to do (and probably already have done) is stick your head in the trunk, and around the back seat. Determine exactly where the rattle is coming from. If you put your arms on top of the rear deck with all your weight, does the rattle stop? In the trunk, see if you can find those two thin metal bar looking things that run parallel to the rear seat, and are located just under the rear most part of the rear deck. Hold those things together real tight, see if that stops some of the rattle. I noticed they were vibrating like crazy until I duct taped (I know, I know....) them together.

I think all of these things helped my situation, but, the final straw was that stupid Bose sub. However, this does not seem to be a variable in your case. Try the other things I mentioned above.

The hardest thing to do is stop rear deck rattle, because it is so thin. You have to remember what the purpose of dynamat is first before you can just install it. Dynamats primary purpose is to make any surface heavier and not move. I have 3 layers of extreme on my rear deck and the sucker still rattles. the metal on the extreme is supposed to be a sound dampener. If I had to do it all again I would do like 4 layers of the spray, which stiffens and makes the rear deck heavier, and then 1 layer of dynamat extreme. That will be a little time consuming but well worth it

The spray sounds like a good idea. I will certainly keep that in mind if things start getting out of hand again.
