Did I Blow My Amp Out?

Think I did. Me & another ORGer were installing my new Kenwood amp yesterday....got everything hooked up correctly, so we thought, and couldn't get anything---no sound, no power, nothing. I messed with it again this morning, and figured out I had hooked up the turn-on wire to the wrong wire from the HU. I fixed that and got the amp up & running, sounded pretty decent.

I was tidying up some of the wires (we were more concerned about getting the thing wired than neatness) and forgot to unhook the battery cable. The power cable to the amp accidentally touched the baseplate on the amp....a few sparks popped out. When I unhooked the battery cable, cleaned up the wires, and hooked everything back up....amp wouldn't power up. No juice, no sound, big fat zero.

So, did i short the damn thing out? Is there a way to test the amp before i buy another one?

Help, y'all.....

Start at the amp (many amps have fuses internally)and check all fuses going back. You did have a fuse near the battery on the main power cable and one either in the amp or right before it....right?

anyway...I'd say theres a blown fuse somewhere that costs much less than the amp!

Good luck

thanks for responding:

the fuse (40A)that plugs into the side of the amp is intact; the fuse (60A AGU) in the power cord to the battery is also intact.

any other ideas? if this bish is broke.....

Take the amp out and run different power wires to it real quick right from the battery (fused). Be sure to give it some power through the remote wire too.

See if you can get the thing to turn on via different wires.

Sounds like it's toast

are there any LED/lights on the amp that would indicate there is power going to it?

the amp has one "status" light on top, which lights up only to indicate when power is being received...and it ain't lightin' up now.

Use a DMM and verify that all the power/ground cable are getting what they need (12+V). If so and the amp isnt working then most likely a bad amp now.

well, picked up a new amp today, hooked it up, and the same thing happened...nothing; so it's definitely a power problem (ground wire is OK). i bought a new power cable also, will check that out tomorrow.

thanks for the input e'rrybody.

Chris, I figured you go that thing fixed a couple days ago. That's why I didn't respond to your other post. You can bring the car to my place tomorrow evening after you get off of work if you want. Or tonight if you want to get it done tonight. If you come tonight bring a spare light bulb. The one in my garage just burnt out, kinda odd, I just replaced it last week?

Well, it just started raining so you may want to put it off till tomorrow, up to you.

Easy man....a live wire can fry alot of stuff. If you ever get a cap better not let the 2 ends touch

You would have to be pretty strong to bend the two ends together. But even then it would just be a spark. Entire thing would discharge in a tiny fraction of a second.

ummmm when u are hooking the ends up with a 4 gauge connector and using L wrenchs it gets pretty easy to touch tghe ends. Have you ever seen a capcitor discharge in a camera? It is a gigantic arc. that is a fraction of the size of 1 farad. It wouldn't be a little spark. More like an explosion dude.

Actually I have seen 1 farad discharge within a few feet of myself. It won't even blow a 60 amp fuse. No where close to an explosion. Just a spark and charred contacts on the cap or the ends of the wire.

I think that wrench you are referring is a Hex Key. Use caution to prevent a burn, but it won't kill you if you screw up. Normally a resister or light bulb is used to charge the cap so that it charges at a slower rate.

Wouldn't ya know....?

After all this drama, the guilty party was......a g0ddamn $2.50 60A fuse!

I swear, the "blown" fuse is identical in appearance as the new ones, so cut me some slack on that. Anyway, thanks all y'all for your suggestions. I got dis bish jammin' now!!
