Installing a NAV unit with a 7" screen

I was wondering if anyone has installed a navigation unit with the redmax or any other screen. I'm trying to find the lowest price set up available.

Do you think installing a laptop under the passenger side wired with GPS software would work? Something like DeLorme street maps or something?

What kind of solutions are there for this?

one solution is don't go with the redmax screen because the resolution sucks.

Agreed. I had the Pioneer AVIC-80DVD with a Farenheit screen (which has better resolution than the Microvision model) and the picture quality sucked. I ended up swapping the whole thing out.

I had a setup with my Laptop and a Delorme Earthmate AND I have installed a separate PC under my seat with a 7" VGA Touchscreen which ran the Street Atlas for a while. Yes, it is possible to do that. Yes, it is more fun. Yes, it can do waaay more stuff than just a navi unit. and yes, it is, in most cases, cheaper.

Where did you place the GPS antenna? was it a permanent install or did you pull it out everytime you left the car? Did the software perform accurately?

yes, it is a permanent setup. quick one, but permanent. as a matter of fact, i still have the PC in the car, even tho I broke my screen (stupid me ). GPS receiver was placed under the rear window. You might want to use another map software, such as MS Streets and Trips or Mappoint. Street Atlas isn't too great. Anyhow, good luck with your setup. Keep us updated.

And yea, www.mp3car.com - that's the best forum for such things. Place where I got all the info.
