Replace only front speakers

I'm getting conflicting info on this so thought someone out there might have attempted this setup. I've got an Alpine HU, model 7894 which I plan to install in my 2002 Maxima that has the bose setup. I was also thinking of installing Alpine component speakers in the front. Now, I talked to crutchfield because they have the Alpine type x component speakers at a great price but the csr didn't know whether they would work with the adapter they send with the speakers. So, at this point I haven't ordered them. I stopped by Cartoys on the way home tonight and the salesman said that it wouldn't work, I would have to take out all the bose stuff and start with all new parts. So can I install the Alpines up front with just the adapter that crutchfield sends with the speakers? Is it even worth just replacing the front speakers. From what I've read it sounds like a lot of people like the factory speakers after replacing the bose HU. Also, I assume there is no way to wire the Alpine unit so that the controls on the steering wheel will work with it.
