sealed for sound quality , ported for loudness. i allways messed around with these boxes and always found my self goibg back to the sealed boxes because they sound cleaner and give more deeper bass

For sound quality go for a sealed enclosure. You can get nice sound with the 10's if you put each of them in a 1 cubic foot enclosure. I have one 12 L7 in my car in a sealed box, it has been in there for years, and still sounds nice.

From what I understand, they have given the back of the cone a little more structural support, as well as the actual cone itself(This supposedly is better at higher sound levels). But as far as actually sounding different I do not know. The basket looks pretty nice, but I do not care about that, as it is installed in a box. I have the original L7, the one that is all black, and that thing is still going strong. I may take a trip to the audioshop and test one of the new L7's out.

ive got 1 Kicker L5 in a ported box....its hits loud and deep but sounds like **** quality wise, it is truly just a SPL sub.. About to move on to JL audio 12W3v2...time for a sub that sounds good as is loud

That is why I prefer sealed enclosures. I am not sure about the L5 but for the L7 you can get really nice sound out of it if you use a sealed box. They have a range for the sealed boxes. The 10" for example will give you a little more impact with a .66 enclosure. If you use the bigger enclosure you will get a flatter frequency response, as well a a little more low end extension (with the 1 cubic foot enclosure). You can also play with the size of the enclosure to match your needs.

There was a truck a SBN in Daytona this year that had upgraded to the new L7's. To be exact he had 4 10's. It was noticably louder. If I hadn't already bought my twelves before they came out, I would have jumped on the newer version.
