I have a 12" solobaric (S12L7) in my car. I am running a Kicker KX600.1 amplifier to it. The amp is rated at 740 watts, rarely do I push it to the limit though. I am very happy with the sound this cobination puts out. A few years ago ran two older solobaric 12" round subs, only for a few days though. I needed my trunk space and the bass was too loud.

I would appreciate if you would let us know in what way it was better, SPL, SQ? I honestly want to know, as I am leaning towards getting a 10" woofer so I can gain a little more room in my trunk. I am looking for something with good impact as well as good sound quality. What enclosure did you run the L7 in (what was the internal volume), and how much power did you have going to it? I was leaning towards a JL 10W6V2, or another Kicker L7. I was actually thinking of maybe getting one from a company called Audiomobile, but when I started looking I found out that they went out of buisiness.

Before I buy my 10" sub I am going to go to several audio shops and listen to as many as I can, but as you know they do not carry all brands. The Audiomobile Mass 2012 12" woofer had received very good revues from a couple different publications, but you could only get them from the company through the internet, this just shows that not only the "main" brands have good stuff.

I was actually digging through my old car audio mags and then remembered that the Audiomobile sub was pretty similar to another company's sub called Crystal. Here is their website.

I am looking at their COMP 10 woofer.

Someone told me yesterday that crystal went out of business? Not sure if it was valid information, crystal makes some badass stuff (their old (s) comp cxp12 something like that was very very good)

Audiomobile went out 2+ years ago but there is a 2012 on ebay for $115, think it's a 12.

A really nice 10" sub would be the Resonant Engineering SE. A 10" costs like 130-150 shipped, 600rms and is really good for the money

But the company that actually built the subs for Audiomobile is still in business. TC Sounds is still the OEM for Eclipse, Elemental Designs, SVS (not their PCi driver), Aerial Acoustics (sub driver only) and many others. Recently they have started selling their standard products through small online sites like Sound Splinter and O Audio. The TC2+ motor was recently measured as one of the lowest distortion subs available to DIYers by a member of the Madisound board.

I looked at the Crystal driver and that's just a standard 12 spoke basket. Actually, the Audiomobile used a 4 spoke cast aluminium basket. Either way, it's just an off the shelf item available to all build houses. The real quality items are parts that you can't see like voice coils, windings, magnet gaps, etc. I'm not "dissing" Crystal. I've heard good things about them but don't have any first hand experience. I am currently running a 15" TC Sounds sub as my home sub.

Thanks for the information Robert .

I think that I will give the TC Sounds TC2+ subwoofer a shot, at $165 dollars for the 12" I think it's worth it. Sound Splinter has the same version, a 10" on sale for $141 for the DVC, that little thing has a Xmax of 20mm. I will see if I can get one of their 10" woofers. The TC2+ 12" Subwoofer looks very similar to the Audiomobile MASS 2012. From what I can tell though, it does not use an underhung voice coil. By the way how do you like the sound that the TC sub puts out? Also what does DIY mean?

Do It Yourself - Most home theater sites (where I spend most of my time) have sections for people who build their own speakers, subs, projector screens and sometimes amps. I can build a home sub that looks just like a $5,000 sub, performs just as well and cost me under $500.

Like I said in my last post, TC was the build house for Audiomobile. There are only a handfull of companies that build high excursion subs. TC Sounds, Destijl Engineering, NCA Laboratories and Eminence are the biggest.

I tried to find that info but I can't. TC is known for their underhung voice coils though. There are advantages and disadvantages on each type of VC. The thread here discusses a few. There's a lot of speaker building knowledge there with Dan and Steven from Adire Audio and supergrass (aka Stephen Ponte from TC Sounds) posting.

I'm using a single 15" sub in a 3.5^3ft sealed box as a home theater sub. The box is too small for the sub and gives it a Qtc of over 1. I use a Behringer Feedback Destroyer (parametric EQ) to bring down a peak at about 50hz and add a boost to the low end. The best way to describe it is "accuate". I can also crank it loud enough to shake the concrete foundation of my house. When the theater room is complete I'll have four of these 15's in an infinite baffle configuration. According to software simulations using Unibox 4.5, I should have a flat frequency response down to about 10hz.

I'd also check out the bargain TC Sounds 10" from AudioHole.

I also see that you are from San Diego. Have you thought about going by the TC Sounds factory and just picking up a sub?

I thought that the DIY meant that but was not sure.

I was actually searching and came across a thread where you posted some replies, I forget what site though. It is pretty impressive that you can build all those things, are you an electrical engineer?

I did think about just going over to TC Sounds, but on their website it says something about that the minimum order is 50 subwoofers. Maybe that is to get one made. I will try to go there sometime next week and see if I can just get one from them. If not I will go with one Mike's from SoundSplinter.

Overall this has been an eye opening experience for me. These subs are just as good if not better than the "main" brands, but at a very reasonable prices. Thanks for the information.

I hang out at all the major home theater sites mostly posting under Robert_J. I'm rlj5242 at AVS and Tivo Community.

Since I almost electrocuted myself because I threw the wrong breaker before changing a light switch, my wife will not allow me to work with anything stronger than 12v DC. I'm an applications programmer that had my job outsourced to India. I'm now on a testing team that tries to break the programs that come back from India. It's no big deal to build stuff like this. Buy quality parts (amp and sub), design the proper enclosure (using free software), build a well braced box (basic woodworking) and put a nice finish on it (that takes practice).

That's what guys like Mike have to order. If you purchased it through AudioHole, I'm sure Stephen would let you stop by and pick it up to save on shipping.

Flashy logos and name brands don't impress me. Quality audio and video equipment at a resonable price will get my attention every time. That's why I use the Dayton line of speakers from Parts Express and subs from Adire Audio and TC Sounds.
