its a smart thing to do. i have mine mounted above the rear view mirror. just run the cord across the top of the headliner and then down the a-piller to the fuse box. find a something that is only hot while the car is on and tap it into that fuse. i have a 5th gen and there was a screw inside the fuse box that also makes for a nice ground

I was going to tap into the back of the cig lighter. What power have you all tapped into? How do I take the gear shift panel out to get to the cig lighter. Really explicite instructions would be awesome.

I tapped my 8500 into the blue with white stripe wire (i believe) in the fuse box below the steering wheel, ran the hardwire kit up the driver's side A-Pillar, along the edge of the top windshield but tucked it under the trim and ended above the rear view mirror where my radar is mounted.

I took the shifter console out and cut all of the electrical tape away from the cig lighter. I then attached the V1's provided splicer into the positive (orange) wire to the cig lighter. I ran the RJ11 through the head liner, down the pillar and under the dash and through the shifter area. It works great with one exception. The tape/velcro provided doesn't stick very well. I will have to buy some doublesided 3M tape and see if it works.
