MTX vs. JL
MTX vs. JL
I know JL audio is the best subs out, but I can't afford them and surely don't want there entry level speakers. How do the MTX sound? Like the MTX Thunder 8500? I'm looking to purchase them off ebay. Does it hit hard like the JL's? I have a 600 monoblock amp by JBL that would push them.
lol. jl is not the "best subs out". jl is known and popular but that doesnt mean its the best. there are many different brands to choose from... and some are better than JL for sure. whats your price range? and what kind of box do you want and what size and how many subs?
Also specify which JL's. I agree with slick. JL is great a marketing a great product for an even greater price. There are a ton of companies that will give you a great product at a reasonable price in comparison. I am not knocking JL's products, just thier prices. I have heard entry level speakers beat an upper level/comp speaker from a competing company and due to system design(box+amp+HU).
I know what u saying. My price range is between $150-$250. I have a decent install i think. I've got JBL GTO speakers in the doors powered by a 250w Directed amp. And then I had 2 JL 10w3 powered by a JBL 600monod amp. The subs were in a big sealed box. My friend has 4 12" MTX Thunder 8500 powered by a recently old 600monod Direct amp. I hear the old models are better than the new ones out now. Now I don't want that many speakers. I still want to use my trunk. The box I had was still kind of big. I want to get MTX speakers, just two, so I get some serious bang back in my trunk. I've heard two 12" Kicker CVR, but I just don't like the way they look. And I've had the audiobahn. Just wanted to try something different. Any suggestion?

Not sure how new they are, but they certainly aren't unknown. Dan Wiggins, the owner, posts on a message board I read and is extremely knowledgeable. They also make the Brahma, which is more expensive but supposedly comparable to the w6 or w7.
There are a few other 'internet' brands out there that are less known but may serve your purpose better than the famous brands. Off the top of my head:

Try www.soundsplinter.com . I am going to go with one of their 10" subs. I think that their products offer a lot peformance for the price.

As for how subs sound, I belive that any setup you decide to go with is 90% (yes 90%, that not a typo) install, and the 10% is the sub.

Having a BP600.1 JBL amp...what would be a good 10" sub that can bang at loud volumes? At a reasonable price, lets say around $200. I'm thinking used speaker at that price. Now if I was able to get a brand new one no more than $300, what would be a good buy?
I have two 12" MTX 3000's I believe and they hit hard. I've had them for many many many years and they still hit just as good as they did before. For a starter system, I would actually recommend MTX if your on a tight budget. Except, their amps are ridiculously priced. I got a JBL amp for my two MTX's and they slam.
Just my $0.02.
Just my $0.02.
i love mtx amps. i'll stand by them to the end. i have 2 MTX t61244a subs i got off ebay for $35 each powered by 2 MTX 4250d amps(75 each) and they sound great to me, but i know it could sound better for the same amount of power. i have heard the new line of MTX subs and tehy sound like a big improvement from the last generation too. if u can get them for a good price, i'm sure youd be satisfied. if you want something a little more powerful though, i'd recommend something like ED or Adire.i forgot to mention that JL is better than MTX in every respect though and i plan to use all JL speakers when i do my next upgrade. if you can afford JL amps, they are in fact the best amps out there, theyre just mega $$$!
I had a 10" MTX 6000 series sub. It went bad within a year. I can't remember exactly what went wrong, but I got it replaced by circuit city for free. They gave me a Alpine Type E sub. It sounded way better than the MTX. I did have a MTX amp and that worked perfect for the two years I had it.
I have 2 10" DVC Rockford Fosgates in my trunk. These were the ones that the HX2's replaced. They hit as hard as the old school JL 10 W6's. They are powered by a mono bridged 250.2 RF amp. Although this isn't the right size amp for those subs they bang, I mean REALLY BANG. I've had JL before and fell in love with their W3's before my car got broken into (not the max). I have also had a Pioneer Premier that sounded sweet in my 90 Max before I sold it with the car. There are less expensive subs that match in quality and sound to JL without having to spend the JL price, trust everyone who is telling you this.
