stock bose sub + aftermarket amp?

stock bose sub + aftermarket amp?
my friend told me that a separate amp could get the stock bose subwoofer to sound better, is this true? if so, how many watts would be needed? the stock bose amp doesnt look promising, so im thinking any amp that has power would do better than the stock bose amp, but i dunno anything...
