How to make spare tire functionable w/ Subwoofers??
How to make spare tire functionable w/ Subwoofers??
What up guys,
I've been searching and looking for pics of people's custom trunk setups and have had very little luck. It's amazing how many people have a sounddomain page and don't have a stereo.
I've seen people who have their amps located in front of the sub box beable to fold up on either side making it possible to see the spare tire.
I'm looking to redo my trunk since the plain box with amps mounted on the back is boring me. I want to beable to see the amps, cap and subs, but the subs aren't really a must for people to see.
I'm asking people to post pics of their trunk and say how they access their spare tires.
Also wondering if anyone has downfired their subs?

har
yeah i have the same set up two subs and a amp mounted behind, and i was also looking for a better setup cause it is boring me aswell plus i am looking at what cap to get too !! =I here it is

Amp mounted behind subs cant see here.

Amp mounted behind subs cant see here.
Well, I have no trunk left so...
cant help out there
So were exactly do you want the amps, do you want to see them when you open the trunk? Oh and be4 we go on I want to point something out to you on the spare tire issue. A LOT of people are concerned about having a spare, well thats great but personally I find it useless (unless its a full size spare)
Here is why I think this way, 1st I got AAA whicn means free towing. The car is slammed for another, plus its got 19's on it. The big problem I had with the spare is that its a doughnut. It doesnt IMO have enough diameter to keep the car off the ground enough to not cause any damage. The car is low, plus the bodykit & the additional loss of clearance from the doughnut just doenst make sense to me. I just wont drive on it because its going to jack something up.
Thats just my thinking on the spare issue & why I dont have one. If this makes sense to you, fine. If you still want to keep the spare fine, just trying to point something out.
Now, back to the setup...what exactly do you want? are you planning on upgrading (price range please)? or just a re-config of your current setup.

Yes I want to see both amps, cap, and subs. When I visit the Kove deal I go to which is about 400 miles away next week I'll ask them because I may get a different box designed, but was just looking for what other people have done with the basic big square box and amps in their trunks.

I got my amps were you got it right now and my sub in a ginourmous box...along with another battery back there. Not much of a looker, but it can pound.I think ill be due in for a re-do of mine (upgrade
) by early next year, but there wont be any room for any spare. The only thing I can think of is a removable amp rack, or a floor that opens up. Something along those lines. Btw-Do use some fans

HitManSE I currently don't use any fans, but now that I think about it, will probably have to if I cover the amps in a rack.
teddibear703 - Pics if you would please. Is your box sealed or ported w/ those inverted subs. I don't know much about those subs.

mine is very boring right now but hopfully it will help you. i do plan to finish it off later in time when i got the time i plan to put in a floor and a wall that will be flush to the box but still be able to use my spare tire.

see if it was a solid two that would make me alot happier. i thought about buying some popcorn packign stuff and throw it in there then put it into my box so i can get a good estimate of how much space is in there... but im too lazy to do that. any orgers out there with popcorn and a box to see how big it is?

Popcorn will also work
Give me a break, I just got off work. Get off yer **** and fill it up man. If it was something like 2.2-2.3 that would suit your needs perfectly (sub displacment)
I think I'm gonna leave the box alone and move it back and up to the top of the rear deck. With the box up some I'll hopefully put my cap in the certer underneath (if it will fit.... if not I'll just put it as far under as I can) the box then have the 2 amps at an angle on the sides of my trunk.
I'll also put like a finisher board in front of the sub box that will got all the way up to the top filling in anything showing behind the box. Remember that I have a hole cut in my rear deck so I am also going to channel that to the finisher board so air will still beable to move from the trunk to the cabin.
I know that may be hard to understand what I'm thinking about, but it's my first idea.

I think I understand what your thinking of, but be4 your proceed I urge you to give DaveB a call and find out how much the rear deck lid costs.
As for letting the air flow into the cabin, I know not every1 is going to be moving that much air but personally Id just let the back seats down.
I do this for two reasons, to let the amps cool (im in AZ, still the big amp goes thermal 50+% of the time I get in the car) and to let enough air pass through.

In case you guys missed this in the 5th gen forum, this is what I came up with.
HERE IS THE THEAD

ummmmmm......... well it's almost as wide as my trunk and I'm pretty sure to be 15" deep and I also I think I raised it about 3 inches before it was touching the white covers for the seat belts under the rear deck. Hope that helps a little.
EDIT- 15" deep x 18" high x something like 42" wide

cool. im looking to see what dimensions i want for my box. have you tried moving the box closer to the trunk and see how it sounds? my subs sound better with them close to the trunk lid but i hate having no trunk space.
You should make the box to the specs of your subwoofers. I'm never moved my box around so I don't know.
I read an article one time talking about all the different positions of subs and they said pointing them up or down will make them sound like crap.
Pointing them away from the driver will give you the most spl, but putting the box in the front of the trunk and pointing towars the driver will produce a louder boom, but lower spl. It also rambled about which is loudest with the trunk open or closed, but I'm not going to ramble about that.
Just point them back in anyway and you can't loose.

If you take out the spare, you have more than 2.0 for sure in the tire well. I have some peanuts saved from all the packages I get/send and I remember them being larger in volume than a 12x12x14 box (more than 1 cu foot). It didn't even fill up half.
If you build an enclosure similar to the last one pictured, you should be able to elevate the floor high enough to build an amp rack you can fold up to access the spare tire. Kinda like building a false floor to make your amps flush, just hinged to open up.
Shouldn't be too difficult, just have to make sure that you choose subs that can work well in a smaller enclosure. Thereby, it allows you to build a much smaller box, leaving more room for the folding amp rack idea.
Good luck.
BTW, I built my amp rack IN my spare tire well. I just make sure I have good tires at all times. If not, make sure my cell phone batt is charged up.....

Hey man, if you ever need any help let me know. I am currently building an IASCA pro car out of my '96, and I will be keeping my spare functional. I have 14 years in the business, and I am a master with fiberglass.
