"telephone" IN RADIO DISPLAY

This is really weird. I got into my car this morning, and the radio display said "TELEPHONE" in caps - and I hadn't even inserted the ignition key yet!!!!!!

Nothing in the radio worked - not AM, not FM, not the CD player, not the on-off switch, nor the steering wheel controls. No noise that I could detect from the amplifier. The CD player quit a couple of months ago, not sure if this is a related item or not. The car runs fine, otherwise. I do not have a telephone hooked into my car's audio system.

Has anyone seen this or heard about this in a Gen 5? Since the car is out of warranty, does anyone know of a good audio repair shop in Norhtern NJ that understands Nissans? What would be a good recommended replacement radio/CD player?

AM/FM/Cassette/CD player, standard unit.

Funny, the next morning (Monday), the "telephone" disappeared, and it was back to radio and casette player only (CD player still does not work).

I have a suspicion that a residual static electricity charge affected the unit. We had thunder storms on Saturday night.

I don't know, but my dad had a '96 Explorer with the stock tape deck in it. One day he noticed that it had 'hello' written across the screen. I didn't believe him until I got in it one day and saw it for myself. Freaked the sheit out of me!

None of the digits were burnt out on the digital display either. It only did this when you turned the truck on and the radio was still off. Kinda freaky. It happened quite a few times after that until he sold it.

Electricity works in mysterious ways... hehe

I am having this same problem. Does anyone know what this is. I also have a 2002 5th Gen and I came out to the car today to the word "telephone" on the radio and nothing I do gets rid of it. Any ideas?!?

Did you really have to bump a 3 year old thread?

well its better if he bumps this old thread which shows someone else had the same problem, instead of creating a new thread.

What's the point of "search" if you're not allowed to bump threads?

Because old threads usually have a solution posted or the issue was resolved, hence why it was pushed so far back.

First, I would have to post 15 times to be able start my own new thread. If I could have posted a new thread I'm sure I would have gotten a "search for it" reply, those are always a favorite on message boards.

Second, as you can see I did search pretty exhaustively with the resources available. There were exactly 2 posts with this problem. (I could post the link to the 2nd if anyone cares) Could you please point out the solution I missed so I could have avoided bumping this thread. As a matter both threads had/have gone off topic with posts like these rather than someone providing an answer. A three year old post deserves an answer, (rather than the off-topic posts both threads have received) if it's out there, just like a 3 minute old post does.

Third, maybe it's old because it's a very rare occurrence. With only 2 posts ever that I could find on the message board it just may not happen very often.

Thanks.

Now later today, just like C430, the problem just went away and everything so far seems fine.
