i dont believe radar detectors are worth the money- its better spent elsewhere
2.5yrs w/out a detector and zero moving violations, dont drive like an a-hole-Insurance premiums are no joke

I can't wait until NY changes the driving age to 18 and then 21. Other states will follow as always. Then none of you immature high schoolers will be on the road endangering people's lives. The judge will most likely side with the cop over some guys trying to fight a traffic ticket.

Try that crackhead $hit in NY where we have an evolved legal system with highly educated judges and they will laugh at you. Try it in other parts of the country where the highest level of education is a bachlors degree and ou may get away with it.

statistically you're wrong so you may want to back it up with something other than opinion. Guys are more prone to street racing, driving drunk, and just about every other endangering act on the road. ESPECIALLY when they are young (<25). I have friends that are cops and know some people that are cops but not friends. The one thing they have in common is they do it for a living. Every single day the courts waste time with people who were speeding, they know it, the cops know it, and the judge knows it yet they lie or try to act like they can cheat the system instead of taking responsibility like an adult.
This is an Amercian right, but it is sad people don't have the moral constitution to not use it as a defense.

cant argue with it being a waste of time but i can argue how BAD the US court system is because i hear about it everyday in my classes. i mean who in america has ever said "im guilty" to anything in a court...unless there are tons of evidence against them? nobody wants to admit they are wrong even if they are. such a petty act as speeding even will make people come up with lies upon lies, but all in all nothing will change. human nature will prevail and we will all drive aggressively at one point or another.
Radar detectors encourage people to drive a little faster if anything. People think they can "outsmart" a cop who writes tickets for a living. Any cop who has a 100 IQ will get you 9 out of 10 times period. You would not try to play chess against a professional, so why would you think you can beat a cop at his own way of life? If you are smart you would realize the only reason using a radar detector is not severly punished is because the courts know cops can function even when they are being used.

eventhough 90% of cops around here never use radar so i have to use my eyes.

well for one thing is that it's illegal in same states and if I was a cop and pulled you over & saw the radar on your dash will make me want to wright a fatter ticket then nor. It happened to me bud.........peace .....Patriots Rule.....

No other detector will tell you where the threat is coming from or how many. So if you pass a cop on your left and ur radar detector is beeping you will think that, that was the only cop around but the V1 will tell you that there is another one ahead. But if you wanna pay for some scrolling LED's, go ahead and spend your money wisely!

Max, pretty much, the only thing you can do is appeal wether or not his speedometer has been calibrated. Officers unfortunately are allowed to issue tickets for traveling "excessively fast" without using laser/radar. If you fight it, you may be able to at the last get the ticket knocked down, but I doubt they will just void the entire thing.

But seriously. What the heck does a digital speed readout really mean, anyway? It doesn't show you anything else but a couple of numbers (three numbers if you're really flying!). It doesn't tell you that YOU are the source of those numbers.

Radar Jammers Do Work!!

Look up Scorpion RCD XP and Phantom RCD XP active radar jammers, they jam all X and K band radar guns digital and analog. They just came out with an active radar jammer that costs $1500 and it jams all radar guns (X, K, and Ka). The Ka band radar gun will eventually punch through the radar jammer at 1000 ft. but you should be able to slow down in time. It is illegal to use and you might end up in jail with a stiff fine if caught so use at your risk.

The guy who runs this site is a former cop who sells radar detectors and laser jammers for a living.
I used a radar detector for a number of years when I first got my license. I think it was a Passport 4600. About 4 years ago I stopped using it when it finally broke. I really haven't missed it, and haven't needed it either. (knock on wood) I think they can be valuable on longer highway trips and some back roads where cops have speed traps. But on the whole if you drive normally and don't stand out from the crowd, you won't need one. (Aka- no weaving across lanes, no red or bright yellow car, no doing 95 on Rt95, etc.)
I have an escort and i only really need it when im late to work or on long trips. I think the V1 is a better buy though, giving you the direction of the threat. But the escort has served me fine w/o problems.
saw where someone said to get a scanner. I wouldn't count on using that to find cops, my sister works for dispatch and they are now fixing to start installing "chat programs" in the police cars, they still use the radio, but not as much. Just giving ya'll a heads up. I would imagine alot of police departments will go to this soon. Oh, and I don't think the radar detector is much use anymore, most cops don't leave it on and only use it when they see someone flying down the road. I did a ride along and the guy never turned his on at all, it was laying in the floor. lol I stay 10 mph over the speed limit and so far have been lucky. I'm not gonna talk about when I was younger though. :-)

yes yes yes yes, i bought the escort 8500 over a year ago and it'll warn before any other radar detector even the valentine one, it costs about 300.00 and I think they came out with a better model! My radar detector will give me time to slow from 120+ without getting caught as long as the cop isn't blipping his radar!

Most larger cities have dedicated traffic officers and that's all they do. In less populated areas though (as a general rule), the cops are more well rounded...they'll be a traffic cop in addition to patroling and responding to calls.

I would also like to add to Brinkley that if the radar was "laying on the floor" that means he is referring to a handheld device which is NOT designed to be on all the time. So it would be on the floor most of the time anyway. Most patrol units that run radar/traffic use either mounted guns or the handhelds (although the majority of handhelds now-a-days are Laser).
Besides, the biggest purpose of an RD is to warn you when there is radar present DOWN the road. Even if it's instant-on or momentary, a quality RD will warn you that there is a radar trap up ahead. It's not designed to tell you that YOU are being clocked. If that were the case, it would absolutely NOT serve ANY purpose at all. Hell, your eyes can tell you when you're being clocked. That's why so many people are confused about what an RD does and doesn't do.
It's intended purpose is to tell you when SOMEBODY ELSE is getting clocked. There is absolutely NO defense when the gun is pointed at YOU. NONE. Then it's too late. The only way to avoid that is to pick him up BEFORE he turns the gun onto you. This is why only the better units offer any protection at all. The cheaper units give you a false sense because by the time they tell you anything is happening, the gun has been turned onto you probably.
Trust me. A quality RD will most definetly be a benefit rather than a detriment to anyone. Noone can be 100% vigilant 100% of the time. I don't care who you are. Distractions are there every day. Even if used for just that reason, an RD is worth it's weight in gold IMO. Get just ONE ticket, and you'll see yourself that what I'm saying is true next time insurance renewal time comes.
Well i sent my V1 for upgrade ($0) since its basicly new and it had pop1 now they're installing pop2 and less false alarms from other detectors (thats really annoying). So i went and bought a cobra for the time being and when i get my v1 back ill return it. Thats is a big downgrade. Damn Its the biggest POS made it doesnt alert my falses that i know of around my house. it will detect the K from the kroger doors when im right in front of it. and last night it detected a Ka from a cop too late. (i wasnt speeding though)
