V1=very good but not the best, was for many years the best, and still continues to be close but just a tiny bit behind.

8500 X50 is the best, hands down, it has 360 degree coverage(contrary to previous posts) and it is upgradable.

The aarows are semi cool i guess but i dont give 2 ****s where the signal is coming from, im slowing down reguardless.

Then again my cars got the biggest piece of **** escort4200 in it.

All of the above (except a few key phrases) are my opinion so dont go nuts over it.

Where are you getting this from? I know you said it was your "opinion" but opinion is always based on something.

8500 X50 is the best, hands down, it has 360 degree coverage(contrary to previous posts) and it is upgradable.
The V1 was the FIRST to be "upgradeable" so therefore it's not an attribute for the Escort since they are doing that to "catch up".

The aarows are semi cool i guess but i dont give 2 ****s where the signal is coming from, im slowing down reguardless.
To be honest, it is obvious you've never used a V1 yourself or you wouldn't make a statement like this. "Semi cool"? The arrows are not designed to be a bell nor a whistle. It is just one more piece of info that makes it easier once you've used it. If someone has never used it, it is easy to dismiss it as window dressing. I said the same thing until I used it. Now, that is one of the two reasons I like my V1 over my 8500. I own and use both in different vehicles.

All of the above (except a few key phrases) are my opinion so dont go nuts over it.

I understand that, but to be honest and as has been shown in this very thread......people that have never used the V1 are usually the very first to criticize it.

I've used more different RD's than probably all but a couple of people in this thread. I still own both and USE both. I've been using my 8500 for the last two weeks while my car has been in the shop. I'm not unprotected, but I certainly miss my V1.

I don't mean to come down on someone for having an opinion, but atleast have something tangible to back up your opinion. "Just because" only works for parents when talking to their kids. In a discussion about "what's best" is lack luster to say the least.

I'm up with Jamie 110% I own a v1 and I love it. I've never even seen a escort or a bel but what i do know is that if they are as good or a little better in reception i guess it wont make that big of a difference but what i do have to know is the direction the threat is coming from, a lot of times ive been in the situation where i pass a popo and then i still have one ahead and thanks to the arrows i dont speed up when i pass the first one!

F radar detectors i just do this: no matter what highway i'm on i do 70-80 and no matter what local street i'm on i do 40. (this is from 8AM-11:30PM, i've found this is the time where the average speed on the streets is around the speed that i listed so ur pretty much safe)

Don't waste your money. I had a radar for ONE DAY! used it to get to NYC (from RI) and back. THe damn thing was beeping all over the placeI turned it off cause it was picking any kind of signal.
Just watch the cars in front of you, be aware of your surroudings and don't go fast on areas you don't know well. I know most the hiding places of the cops in Ri.
Just be careful

down here in houston cops dont use X anymore, which is why i love my old skoo escort 7500. Program x off, only time it goes off is when theres a cop and i always see the cop (sooner or later) when my radar goes off. my radar has saved me about $2000 already......

Alright i do admit i have never driven with a V1, but ive been in a car with one. i do own an 8500, im sure there both great, but just to adress your opinions here goes.

Im not sure i get the first part, yes Valentine had the upgradebility first but if escort has it now i count them both equally there.

Again the aarows may be helpful i guess, the escort doesnt have them and i didnt feel like i needed them after seeing the V1, nice to have yes, but necessary no, just slow down when u hear the thing.

I think that covers it all

its amazing how much a hot topic this has become. A year later I still think getting a radar detector and/or talking about is a complete waste of time/money especially with the horrendous gas prices.

Will there be a one year anniversary for this thread?

just got a ticket last weekend and say f*** getting a good radar detector. Just saw Rocky Mountain model on ebay for 70 bucks, being the laser scrambler and detector, is a lot of radar for the money. How good is it? I know V1 is tha shiet, but $400 is a lot of money. Can someone compare these two? Also, V1...its the benchmark for all radars today...where's the place to buy for cheapest price? decisons.....

In case no one has been listening to what others have said previously in this thread, here's a link to a test of various jammers. The results are pretty much universal to all the reviews I've read over the years.

No radar detector will completly save you from a ticket. If the cop is using Laser and he is GOOD, you are fuked. I got ticketed a month ago for 75 in a 55. Got hit with Laser a good 1500feet away. Cop knew I got down to 45mph within a second, so I knew he had an accurate reading. I was slow on the reaction timing a bit, but he had my locked on instantly. Ive gotten away numerous times from Laser at even higher speeds, but at those times I didnt have my front plate on, that makes a huge difference.

My advice, Radar detectors are perfect for when driving on the highways at night. Because you will never see the cop if he's hiding in a good spot. The 8500 X50 has the Best KA range out of all the detectors, and I believe the best K range aswell. This is why I love my X50, a lot of cops still use KA around here and thats why I have no tickets with that band. There are products out there that will help you avoid getting hit with Laser from a far distance, im going to be looking into those. Aslong as you can cut down on the distance you get locked on at, you will have a good amount of reaction time to get down to the right speed. That's what I got screwed on.

I guess I'll joing in on this...

I love my V1, had to drive my brother's 97 Max today, I left my radar detector in mine on accident. It felt like walking around naked.

But it wil not save you from all tickets. I just got one a month ago. It was late at night with no other cars on the road and I got hit with instant on. I was accelerating from a 35mph zone into the 55mph zone. I got radared at 58 in a 35, thats 23 over. He gave me a ticket for 5 over though. The sad part is that I know that is a common spot for cops to camp out. I just messed up and had to pay.

Just use common sense along with a radar and it goes a long way

Laser and Instant-on bands will easily get you... unless you are quick enough.

When I got hit with Laser, I was extremly tired. Worked 13 hours that day and was heading home. I obviously wasnt alert as I usually am and failed to react intime.

The only people that think that "the only people that don't think radar detectors are worth it, don't have one" aren't using their heads.

So by your rationale, you're saying that anyone that's ever had a radar detector thinks they're worth having? That obviously can't be true.

What I'm saying is that anybody that has ever had one, and has had it warn them of even one cop, believes they are worth it.

Prove me wrong.

$300 radar detector is a better value than a $75 ticket, and a 20%increase in insurance for the next three years, and possible jail time for reckless, and possible loss of job if driving is your vocation. DUH!!!

i agree with radars serving a purpose ( i own an escort)but you are incorrect on a few things. a $75 ticket will NEVER get you jail time and a 20% insurance increase if you have any common sense and either plea nolo contendere, or hire a lawyer. (assuming you have a relatively decent record)now if you are going over lets say 90 and get a $200 ticket then you might be in a little more trouble.

Unless your going to buy a $300+ radar, it isn't worth it.

All the people that say they hate radar because it has false alarms and never works have cheapie units.

For the radar to tell your speed it must be line of sight, but definately not to pick it up. Tell that to my valentine one that picked up a parked police officer behind some brush on a side road 1.1 miles away behind corners. That day was surely a victory for I.. lol.

I love my Escort. If you use it correctly it should give you a significant advantage when wanting to drive fast.
