Amp Suggestions
I was thinking about getting 2 12" Type R's and wondering what a good amp to power them was. I was thinking the Alpine MRD-M501 but not sure if that would work or not. I'm a newbie when it comes to this so any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.
Just to let you know, Alpine isn't the best stuff out there. Atleast you didn't say BOSS or Roadmaster....
You can definitely get better for the same price, or less, you would pay for Alpine.
But anyway, I had a older alpine amp and type s sub in my first car and it sounded pretty good, until it got stolen.
The amp you mention would not deliver enough to the subs to get the full potential out of them.
Alpine MRD-M501:
• V12 AccuClass-D™ Design
• 550W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N)
• 425W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
• 225W x 1 RMS (4ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
SWR-1221D:
# Power Handling Capacity (Peak) : 1000W
# Power Handling Capacity (RMS) : 300W
I would get the 1221D 2ohm+2ohm DVC. This way you can wire it to get a 2ohm load for the amp. I would consider another amp though. Maybe the MRD-M1001 if you can afford it.
BTW I do like how Alpine shows their ratings in 12V! This is a more realistic value then the 14.4V which most cars never see consistently.
Hope this helps!

thanks for the reply, I'm open to any options, just want something that hits hard. I was looking at the SWR-1241D's becuase I found a place selling them for 99 bucks (and the 1221D's being $110) so I thought that that wasn't too bad. But what would ya recommend amp wise that is pretty cheap becuase the MRD-M1001 is a tad hefty for me, that would be good for these subs, or any other subs if ya know better ones for about the same price..... thanks again A.J.
the JBL 600.1 would do pretty well.
also take a look at the concept audio 800w models, I run concept amps on my subs and they are top notch in my experience.

I've been runnig Kicker amps in my car for years with great results. Right now I have a KX600.1 running a 12" Solobaric and I am very happy with it. It is rated at 600 watts RMS. The actual spec sheet that it came with has it rated at 740 watts. Crutchfield has it for $430 dollars right now, if you want you could get it on Ebay for around the high 200's or so. You could get two of the Alpine woofers you want and wire it up to this amp. Just make sure you get the woofers with the dual 2ohm voice coils, that way you can wire each woofer as a 4ohm speaker and when you do the final wiring to the amp with both woofers you will get a 2ohm load (this will squeeze all of the power this amp can give you).
