98 BOSE HU not compatible with 96 BOSE system.

So I have a 98 BOSE HU and a 96 BOSE car that is being sold. I had a clarion in there and got rid of the original 96 HU. Well I tried putting the 98 HU in there but as soon as I plugged it in it started making this loud popping noise. The HU wasn't even on and the keys weren't in the ignition. I thought the BOSE units were interchangeable?

they are, all units from 95-99, can fit onto any other max 95-99, not sure why you got the popping sound, did you try pluggin back the 96 unit and see if you get the popping sound still?
