SAT radio
seems like Sirius continues to out-do XM:

Siruis will now boast Howard Stern, NBA, and NHL along with current NFL, commercial free.
XM has nascar, charges a few pennies less with commercials.
Both offer portable units used in the car, home, and handheld radios, and are available from the factory in cars. Sirius is gaining more exclusive auto deals.

I have XM and love it, but I am not opposed to having Sirius.
I was an early adopter to XM. When I signed up Sirius wasn't even available, so I've just stuck with XM.
I figure my Delphi SkyFi unit will last for a while. When it's time to replace it I will re-evaluate which service to pick up.
I wonder if one will buy out the other at some point....

I have XM and love it.. 100% commercial free music, 21 cities with 24 hour weather/traffic reports, equipment costs a bit more but is higher quality IMO, and the service is cheaper... XM also has the biggest audience at just over 2 mil... I have the Delphi SkyFi system in there now, but since I just got a new head unit, Im buying a tuner so I can have more of a clean looking install without having to use an FM modulator.

Yes XM is cheaper, more customers and commercial free Music. But it has been out a lot longer than Sirius, meaning most of that audience did not have a choice when they joined. Sirius is growing faster customer, technology, and service wise than XM has. It is now offered by more auto manuacturers and is completely commercial free. It also is totally original SAT broadcasts. XM recycles some old broadcasts heard on "regular" radio. Plus Sirius sat dishes revole instead of staying static (XM) in one loaction above the earth, resulting in less dropped/faded service.
Now with exclusive rights to the NFL, NBA, NHL, and Stern, it's only going to grow faster aquiring more exclusive services.

nba eh, nfl eh, nhl isn't even playing this season... and stern is terrible. The only time I ever have problems with reception with my XM is when I am in a parking garage, or something else covering the car completely.... I do like the fact that if you are a sirius subscriber, you can listen to it online for free.. I wish XM did that.

I have XM and love it. I used one of XM's traffic channels for the first time when I drove through Atlanta over the weekend and it was awesome. A friend of mine was also travelling with us, but was about 10 miles ahead of us, and he got stuck in a 2 hour traffic delay while I cruised around it on 285.
Also, my headunit has MP3 playback capability and I have not made a single new MP3 CD since I got XM.

Sirius is $12.95 per month with the almost all the Sports Franchises and Stern down the road INCLUDED. The monthly fee includes free online streaming and you get everything.
XM is $9.95. If you want streaming, O&A, or Playboy you pay extra. Total price is $18.96.

I wanna get sat radio eventually, but its hard picking between the two. The only way to know for sure is to find a friend with one and another friend with the other then evaluate which has better channels. Personally, I'm a sports fan but....I sure as heck am not in the car when football or basketball is on. Then again, i could listen to the 49er games from my computer (niners arent gonna be on tv for a long while ) I love howard stern, but i get him for free on krock, so that means nothing to me. you don't need cd quality stern! So once again, it comes down to who has the better, commercial free stations....

Also, Sirius has a contract with a large technology corp. to update their systems next year, surpassing XM technology. (read the article a while back)

well I own both xm and sirius! my xm plugs into the back of the headunit and the sirius plays throught the FM radio. I love them both! the signal is the samw with both of them as far as I am concerned. xm has 2 satellites and they own them. sirius has 3 satellites but they "rent" them. they are both 100% commercial free. xm is $9.95 a month and sirius is $12.95 a month
next year sirius is also going to offer satellite TV! yes thats right satellite TV in your car! I know they have it now but you have to put a huge "plate" looking thing on your roof. with sirius you will use your satellite antenna and just plug it into another box in your car. they are trying it out in "test markets" and say that hopefully in a year they will be able to offer it to everyone.

Maybe this is why XM doesn't let you try thiers for free, you'll realize it sucks. Plus with Sirius sub. you get free access online included.

hey baseball fans-- XM just signed a huge deal with MLB
"Starting with the 2005 preseason, you'll hear live, play-by-play game broadcasts from every MLB team. All season long, from Spring Training through the World Series. Whether you're stuck in game day traffic, or you've moved away from your home team, with XM's nationwide MLB coverage you'll never miss a game."

Honestly, I think baseball will be a money loser for XM. It will not generate enough income to warrant the high cost. I'm not claiming Howard is any sort of God, but I really think that he will redefine the Satellite market. Sirius will surpass XM withing the next 2-3 years with subscriptions. You can quote me on that

I want to get XM. XM has superior technology, many more users, much more cash on hand, and right now, from a financial stand-point, seems to be the company that will last in the long run...I'm a portfolio analyst so I'm not talking out of my ****.
Many people see the future in satellite radio as coke and pepsi....both companies surviving. We'll see what happens.

Actually from a technology standpoint Sirius is the superior of the 2 companies. Sirius uses lower bandwidth for talk stations and increases it on music stations. Their setup allows them to easily change bandwidth stategies. XM on the other hand spreads their bandwidth evenly throughout their entire lineup. Without a heavy investment in newer technologies, they will not be able to adjust this bandwith in the same fasion Sirius is able to. With XM having to install so many terrestrial repeaters to keep strong signals, their operating costs to keep these working will continue to go up. Sirius doesn't have to rely as heavily on terrestrial repeaters given with the location and number of Satellites they have. I'll have to trust you financial judgement. Just about everyone I work with, family members and friends will be buying Sirius equiptment to listen to Howard. It will be interesting to see how many of his 17 million+ listeners will buy Sirius subscriptions. I was thinking of plunking down $1000 or so in Sirius stock for the long haul. Your speculating that would be a mistake?

Many people I know bought Sirius stock as soon as they heard Stern was signing on. One thing that I'm thinking is that Stern is not an idiot...he must have done his research to sign with Sirius so that already shows some sign of hope for the company. Both XM and Sirius have not been able to turn a profit yet. Regarding technology...you are right...I incorrectly stated that XM has the superior technology.
Like I said in my previous post, I think for the forseeble future both XM and Sirius will survive and try to out do each other...Coke and Pepsi example works very well here. Both have some good programming contracts and it remains to be seen what rights each will get in the future. Bottom line are profits which come from subscribers and XM is the hand down favorite...2.5M subscriptions versus Sirius which has less than 1M.
Just keep in mind that this would be a long term investment. If this is something you are seriously thinking about then give me your email addy and I'll send you some research reports regarding the stock(none paint a positive picture).

PM will be coming to ya. I realize it's a long term investment and I could really kick myself in the butt for not buying earlier. I had a very strong feeling Stern would go to Sirius. I did this once before. Years ago I had a friend across the street that said that she knew someong that worked for AOL and they were about to announce that they were going to introduce a monthy access fee instead of a usage fee. I sat by as he maxed out all of his credit cards and savings to by as much AOL stock as he could. The very next day the announcement came. Within 30 days or so, he more than doubled his money, but became leary and sold it all. At that time I had 10k sitting in the bank, but my conservative nature just couldn't permit me to take the plung.

guess you mean antenna? if so, many have it on the rear deck inside the car and it works fine. but factory installed cannot do that.

So what do you guys think of sound quality? I'm mainly interested in sirius, but XM too. Please compare to regular FM radio and CD's. Also please say if you've got XM or sirius. Thanks alot...I think satellite is going on my x-mas list.
#38
I have Sirius. Coworkers have XM. Honestly, both sound about the same, but it also depends on the station that your listening to. XM compresses equally amongst all it's stations. Sirius compresses more on talk formats and less compression for the more popular music. I'm sure Stern will have minimal compression.
Sat radio doesn't have CD quality sound nor is it FM quality sound. I would say it's in between the two leaning more so to the CD side. It's comparable to say MP3's.
