installing 6 1/2 speakers in the rear of a '96
hey, figured I'd just pass this along. I got 6 1/2's for the rear deck of my '96 SE. The actual speaker size is 6 3/4, but I figured out a way to get the others into the deck, since 6 1/2 is a more common size. My old stock panasonic speakers had a black plastic piece as part of the mounting section of the speaker. The old speaker part is located on top of the metal frame of the speaker and runs around the cone. I popped it off by hand without any problem. I used it as part of the mounting hardware for my new speakers.
I was replacing the stock with Polk dbs. The mounting holes on the polks lined up across the piece I had popped off the stock, so I marked where they lined up and pre-drilled the holes, marking then as to remember where the holes lined up. Then I mounted the old speakers mount-part back onto the Maxima. I used double-sided scotch tape as a dampener between the old piece and the new speakers and mounted the new speakers on top. I used 1/2 inch wood screws to screw the polks into the old speaker part [my bracket]. The speakers mounted solidly and sound great. Also, the rear deck fits over them fine with the stock speaker covers. Anyways, just wanted to pass that on. I took 2 screws off the stock speaker covers for fear of them pushing down the rubber surround.
