Newbie Installer with wiring question.

I have a 97 Maxima GXE. I am upgrading my stock non-bose head unit plus all four speakers. I am not installing an extra amp or sub. Just a nice clean basic upgrade. I printed out all the install information from this site plus others. I have the wiring harnesses for the Nissan plugs. The downloadable instructions suggest wiring the black ground wire right with the radio harness black ground with the sense that the new radio mounted in the factory brackets will ground itself...meaning I do not have to screw the radio ground into a metal frame. Is this true, common and correct? All other wiring is staight forward...but, I just wanted to make sure that the printed instructions off of Install Doctor were true to form.

I purchased an AIWA CD Reciever 52X4. I puchased two three way pioneers and two four way pioneer speakers.

Any suggestions and / or tips?

Thank you.

One other question: My car manual suggests not only disengaging the negative battery terminal but also disengaging the air bag system before working in the dash to install the new stereo.

Any tips and / or advice on this?

Thank you.

I have read that, too, about the HU grounding itself through the brackets, but I went ahead and grounded the wire, too, since it was there. I'm not an expert on the airbag system, but I didn't do anything to disable it while working in the dash. I've done a lot of custom wiring in the dash and I haven't had an issue with the airbags. The airbag wiring is bright yellow IIRC, and I don't think Nissan routes them through the area where the HU wiring is.

The install information simply states to merge the new radio harness black ground wire with the nissan black ground wire...and then simply install the new HU to the factory brackets...and this grounds it. I suppose one can go either way.

So, you just disconnected the negative battery terminal without disengaging the airbag system. No issues.

Thanks for the tip.

That's correct.

The install instructions say to check the power before splicing wires and installing the HU...if it is a simple HU upgrade (non-bose, single din) install with an aftermarket wiring harness that plugs into the nissan harness...is checking power a big deal? Is it out of caution. The install I am about to do is rather straight forward with no subs or amps.

Speaker harnesses for a 97 Nissan Maxima. I have a non-bose / single din set up and I am upgrading the head unit plus four speakers. I cannot look up wiring harnesses for a speaker set up. Any suggestions other than being creative with my install?

Thanks.

you should check a locar car audio store for a harness. it should be like 10 dollars, i think even pepboys and autozone have them. you match the colors up from the radio to the harness you just bought then you plug it in to the harness on the car, and then into the radio. what else do you need help with?
