What speakers for front doors of 4th Gen?
Hi, what speakers fit in the two front doors of a 1996 Maxima? I tried a Pioneer 6 1/2, but it didn't fit when used with the stock plastic mount piece. The door panel hit the top of the speaker. How did you guys mount your front door speakers in your 4th gens?

I am having the exact same issue. 97 Nissan Maxima...and I am in the middle of a system upgrade: hu, plus all 4 speakers. I have new pioneer 6.5 inch speakers and I see that it may be possible to mount them on the existing speaker mount using the outside metal tabs...the holes do not line up exactly. On the speaker mount there are two plastic line up prongs which may have to be filed down for some kind of fit.
The other option I am telling myself is to purchase some kind of speaker harness that compensates for the different holes etc...this would then get attached to the speaker mount and the the speaker itself.
There has to be some sort of after market speaker mount or bracket that will fit the existing mount and line up with the speaker holes.
Jeez, if is not one thing...then it is another.
Anyone have any tips?

Yeah, you typed out everything I was to lazy to type.
What I did was mount my 6 1/2 that I took from the back deck onto the plastic mount. I used the screws that came with the speaker. I screwed them right into the factory screw holes in the plastic. I didn't get the screws in as good as I would like, but I was good enough. Then, I put the door panel back on and the speaker grill on the panel was hitting the speaker - no good. So I don't know what to do and what speakers to get.
I hope all that made sense.
And after I put everything back together I noticed when I power lock my doors, they lock and quickly unlock. That's when the key is in the ignition. When I have the ignition turned off the locks work fine.

Oh yeah, I filed down those **** with a Dremel.

I just ran back to Best Buy and exchanged the 6.5 pioneers with the 6.75 4way pioneers...the holes line up perfectly with the slightly larger speaker. I have yet to attach everything including the door panel...but, I checked the depth of the speaker mount...3 inches. The new speakers are 2.75 inches or so...plus there might be a .25 inch clearance with the door panel. I am going to check it out and see. I am holding my breath with this project...one thing after another.
Well...all speakers are installed. I bought the slightly larger pioneer 6.75 inch 4 way speakers and they all fit my 97 Nissan Maxima speaker mounts. I bought the wiring harnesses for each speaker to fit the existing speaker plugs. On all four re-mounts of the new speakers, I put an extra washer on each screw for durability and snug fit.
One thing I learned in doing all of this is a new appreciation for any professional installer. It is not so much an issue of the new hu and speakers but an issue of getting at the place where you need to do the work. The time consuming thing is taking apart the car to get to all the speaker mounts.
Another thing I learned is that the car manual, Chiltons, Crutchfield and some others have incomplete information on helping you take apart the door panels, rear seat, dash etc. etc. There is always some little trick or unknown bit of information or never mentioned issue that creeps up in the process.
For example, they tell you to take the door panels completely off...I found this extremely difficult...instead...I loosened the door panels enough to work from below...I unscrewed the door panel speaker grill first using a mini-phillips head screw driver...this makes it much easier to get to the speaker mount screws.
Another example, they do not instruct you on how to remove the third middle brake light from the rear deck...almost impossible. Instead....I unclipped enough of the rear deck to get the speaker screws using a ratchet.
In all, it was a time consuming task but well worth it if you care for your car and you want to do things right.

try going to www.crutchfield.com or www.cardomain.com, then go to what fits my car, put in your year and model and then it will show you everyhting that fits the stock location or tell you what you will have to do to make it fit, i dunno if the info they give is 100% right but i have never had an issue, after you find out what fits, order it or go to the store and get the same model
Black Max:
Just take your time with the install...it does take patience and time. The Pioneer 6.75 TSA1780's fit the screw holes on the original mounts. It is better to work with the door panels loosened. Work from underneath the door first to remove the small screws that hold the door panel speaker grill from inside the door panel. Remove the grill first and then work to get the speaker mount screws loosened. The 6.75 inch Pioneer TSA1780 speakers will fit the original screw holes with the original screws. I did not put the extra decorative speaker faces on when I installed the speakers. The tweeters do clear the door panel speaker grills when you remount the grills and door panels...they clear about a quarter inch.
The rear deck speakers are a pain to get to and mount...be careful...work slowly. You can lift up the deck panel enough to get a ratchet in to unscrew the speaker screws. Instead of screwing the new speakers with the given sheet metal screws...I used machine screws and nuts and worked from inside the trunk while my dad tightened the nuts from the deck...again, I used some washers to make a secure snug fit. Be careful with all speaker plugs and connections...the new speakers have very delicate speaker prongs that can bend and break off.

I installed a Pioneer 6.5" 3-ways with the stock mount. I just took a speaker out of my rear deck to try. The tweeter on top hit the door panel grill. I took the whole panel off, then put it back on and noticed it didn't fit.
The Infinity 6.5" speakers are looking pretty good right now.
