Amp keeps blowing fuses
Amp keeps blowing fuses
Allright heres the situtation:
I got a 12" rockford fosgate off my friend I want to install in the max. I bought a wireing kit from best buy and installed the kit. When I attach the wires to the amp (ma audio hk 927 or somthing like that) and attach the positive lead back onto the battery the amp fuse blows.
Additional info/questions
- I couldn't find a hole in the firewall to run the positive wire and am not comfortable drilling into it so I ran the wire through the door for temprary purposes, other then looking ghetto is there any problems associated with this?
- Could it be the wiring thats causing the amps fuse to blow, and what should I look for?
- I used a bolt from the, I think its the struts im guessing for the ground.
- The fuse in line with the wire is a 25 rated one and does not blow when I attach the wire back onto the battery.
Any help is appreciated, im just a diy'er thats trying to learn and save some cash.

i ran my power cable through the door for years no problem. you also have the "radio out" small power cable right? It needs to be connected to a power source only on when car is on. if all the wires are new, connections on amp "clean" no stray wire strands crossing over, a good ground (existing bolt in trunk, or under back seat), then I would increase te fuse.
I actually did away with in-line fuse because of one blowing. So I used a circuit breaker. check an installer for one with right amperage. they diconnect if power surge occurs, then resets with car restart.

Thanks for your help, Im going to follow each wire and make sure none of the wires are stripped and making contact with anything metal. I heard that changing the fuse on the amp (a 20amp one) to a bigger one is not good and only manufacturer recommended fuses size should be used.
And the "radio out" im assuming is the amp turn on going from the head unit to the amp? what voltage should this be reading if its working properly?
The fuse inline with the power cable is 20 amp and the fuse in the amplifier is a 20 amp one.
Thanks for your help so far

lol. Oh the suspense... What I did was take out all the wireing and inspect it for any part of the wire that may be bare thats making contact with the chasis, therefore making a short circuit and thats what exactly was happening. I taped it up real nice and volia. Now I need to mount the amp should I just mount it to the back of the seats in the trunk?
excellent. same thing happened to me. and for the amp question, doesnt matter where you mount it, just make sure it doesnt bounce around.. mine is mounted right to the left on the wall of the trunk through a hole that was already there (amp first mounted to a piece of wood)
lol, I still have to mount the amp and sub down somehow. Im thinking of taking the carpet out and getting a piece of wood cut exactly like that, then covering the wood with the carpet and use velcro to attach the sub and screwing the amp down. The only problem would be the spare, the wood might not sit flush.
