I need a guide or some sort of help with understanding a few things.

I have the stock Bose 6-disc in-dash changer with the speakers in and the stock Bose sub out.

I need to know if it is possible to keep the stock Bose headunit and install aftermarket speakers, and if this is possible, how do I do it? What ohm do the speakers have to be?

Also, I'd like to know what is needed to replace everything, including the stock headunit, while retaining the steering wheel functions and a good look. How much would the fabrication cost (steering wheel function, dash trim to hold the aftermarket unit, etc.?)

Try www.crutchfield.com first. You can build a system for your car and the wire harness, face plate, and everything else needed to install your system is included. They also have the "thingy" that allows you to use your steering wheel controls with an after market HU.

the bose systems dont have amps in the deck if im not mistaken they are located elsewhere in the car, as for the resistance of the voicecoils they should be marked on the bottom of the speaker itself, the most common is 8 ohm for door speakers though just to let you know. i would probably take it to a professional just because it is a bose and is more complicated than a regular oem deck. i know that my friend had an early 90's model with bose and they had to tear most of the stock wiring out and replace it in order to run aftermarket stereo equipment.

Why not post this in the audio and electronics forum? But to answer your questions. No, you don't need to change everything. But at a minimum you will need to get an external amp and a line driver to run all new interior speakers.

 

First off, read the Audio Forum's FAQ... I've answered alot on this subject.

Secondly, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THE WIRING. I don't want to say this again, but I will. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THE WIRING. You will have to tap some wires together at the amp in the trunk, but it is COMPLETELY possible to replace the entire system without replacing the stock wiring. It is still RECOMMENDED that you replace the wiring, but not a NECESSITY.

When you replace the entire system, you'll need some devices in order to keep the full functionality of the stock radio. You'll need the PAC SWI-X for the steering wheel controls, as well as a jumper wire to ground out a wire behind the radio so that the trip controls will work.

 

Actually in Bose theyre 1-2, typical cars as well as aftermarket speakers are 8.

Thanks all.. looks like if I want to replace the speakers, I would have to replace the HU as well, since I don't want it to continue to cut in and out on the left side like it has been doing for 2 days now. And I also don't want to take it to the dealership because I think they'd fukc with me for having an aftermarket amp and sub.
