Problem with Steering Wheel Audio Controls

My Maxima is developing a problem with the audio controls on the steering wheel. They are not as sensitive any more and sometimes I have to press them multiple times to get a response. And sometimes when I do I the I get a double hit.

Anyone have any idea what's going on and if there's an easy way to fix it? I'm out of the bumber-bumber warrantee so I don't feel like taking it to the dealer.

I'd take the radio out and use a multimeter to check the controls.

I'm a real newbie when it comes to car stereos. What would I be checking exactly with the multimeter?

I'm assuming some kind of wiring harness will come from the steering wheel and plug into the stereo unit. Is this passive? Do I just have to check the resistance between the various wires in the harness?

I have the same problem with my '01' AE. I have become so irratated with it that I'm tempted to upgrade HU with the PAC SWI-X controller. Let me know outcome of intermittent button function in case I decide to stay factory.
