WTF!!! READ THIS SHIET YOU WONT BELEVE IT! at least i dont!

yea so im in my trunk and everyting is disconnected becasue i am rewiring my ground, power wire, cap and rcas for better connections and new setup. now i know i shouldnt work in wet climates, but it was a little mist a drissle outside and its real cold. so i am leaning against the inside of the trunk and im wiring my shiet. then i look over and i see my sony amp a liitle moist. i quickly wipe it off, and as i wipe the towel[ a little damp] quickly acrros the terminals of the amp i see the power light flash! im like wtf! nothings connected to it i swear! i do it agian, and it flashes. im thinking its the reflection of the trunk light, i rub the towel across the terminals again, and im like o **** it lit up agian! now is this because we have voltage in our body? and was it because i was leaning on the car i was grounded or something? **** this **** is really crazy! i tink my amp is possesd!

probably because water other then pure water is conductive. pure water is actually an insulatent. when you wiped of the terminals you probably caused the ground and power to touch or the power and the remote to touch and the power stored inside the sony amp caps caused a short power burst if you keep doing it, it will stop because you will use all the power stored in the caps of the amp.

matt90max, this is a def possibility. Where did you aquire your knowledge of conductive vs resistive properties of water based upon purity? I am just curious. Not to many people know these things.

The only other thing I can think of is in addition to the above post is some stored static electricity in the towel. It's a shot in the dark, just a theory.

wait, i remeber rubbing the towel on the carpet of the trunk to dry the floor mat of the trunk. think that stored static electricity from friction?

If everything was Disconnected, then it was most likely just simply the power left in the caps of the amp.

i had an electronics class and it probably was just the power stored in the caps of the amps. i was told that while Pure water is the best insulation. any water like tap water which has minerals in it is a very good conductor, except there is not much of a way to control it.

in pure water, there's no negative and postive ions floating around to carry the current. there's only hydrogen and oxygen atoms.

2_Da_max... no pun intended man but you shouldn't be working outside where mist or moisture is present. It's simply bad for any electrical components. As for water being conductive, try dropping a hair dryer plugged into an AC outlet and see what happens. Good thing your Sony amp is already messed up when you wipped your damp cloth on those electrical connections. Another good practice is to disconnect the ground side of your battery and your caps when working on your audio wiring.

I'm in the water purification business and water is generally measured by its hardness (TDS - total dissolved solids). Pure water has a TDS of 1 - 10 which is hardly anything that is conductive. Anything above 10 is where your drinking, mineral, and tap water is. Distilled water is 0 TDS or below.
