3rd Gen. door speaker upgrade

Happy New Year Guys!
Have non-Bose system and upgrading by replacing head unit and speakers. Stock door speakers are crap at 4" X 6". Has anyone upgraded to 5" X 7"? If so how did you modify the stock plastic enclosure? Is it feasable to eliminate enclosure all together and make mounting from 3/8" plywood and plastic speaker baffles for weather protection. Also, standard rear speakers could stand upgrading. How hard is it to cut rear deck with a sawsall to accept 6' X 9"?
Thanks!!

i used to have the small 4x6s up front with my older speakers. currently, i have 6.5s" up front using some speaker mounts i got from james92se (i highly recommend getting some speaker mounts from him, 35 bucks shipped, and direct bolt on replacement). i would just get some decent speakers for the rear and don't change them to 6x9s. then get some NICE speakers up front. i think you'll be more happy than some 5x7s and 6x9s.

Thanks for the reply. PMing James now. Do you run separate tweeters with your Alpines?
