Sub aiming???

I've been throwing around several ideas for the sealed box I'll be building for the ID8V.3 (Image dynamics 8" version 3) that is on it's way. Some would allow the sub to be aimed forward (through the armrest hole) or back and other's would only allow it to be aimed forward. It seems that most have their subs aimed backwards...why is this? What kind of sound difference's would aiming the sub forward/back/up create? Thanks alot.

facing sub to the back, the trunk acts like another enclosure and the sound waves bounce off the trunk lid and create a bigger boom.
facing forward, the waves just float into the much roomier cabin and are not as boomy because its like a bigger second enclosure than the much smaller volume of the trunk.
face them backwards man, if louder is what u want.
this is just my take on it, so I might get 'soldered' for it.

Good try Maximeltman. But it doesn't work on all cars like that. I have done a couple of setups where aiming it forward gave it a bigger boom. This is one of things you don't know till you try.

Of all the time I spend doing a system, tuning takes the most. Install is a breeze. BUT because you have so many ways to do everything tuning is a pain. You can put the subs at up towards the seats, facing forward or back. Or toward the rear facing either way. Set the deck at one level, or the amp at this. Most people just like to throw in and go. And usually 5 or 6 months down the road their subs go or the amp fried.

And it sounds like you're going to make the box fit in one spot? If you're doing it so it's a little universal, try everything. See what you like.

That's a good sub. I have 2 of them in my rear deck.

Aiming the sub toward the back of the car will make more boomy bass, but it can also create a delay between the sub and the mids up front. Plus it will make the trunk panels buzz and rattle.

If you aim the sub into the interior, you need to completely seal-off the interior from the trunk, with only the sub showing through the pass-through with no extra spaces. If you just set the enclosure into the trunk with the sub aimed at the pass-through, you'll probably get cancellation and won't have much bass in the interior.

faced towards the cabin is usually tighter bass response.

So what I'm understanding is basically to the back is spl and to the front is SQ?

You say if I face it forward I should close off the trunk completely, so basically I should just dynamat (or probably a cheaper alternative material) that metal plate?

Thanks for your input everybody...Although I still don't know what to do. The more info the better though.

you have a setup that weighs like 20 lbs, just move it all around the trunk and see what YOU like.

I'm trying to decide how to design the box though. Some of the disigns would allow this...others wouldn't.
