remote starter only - what did you have to pay?
remote starter only - what did you have to pay?
I'm particularly interested in folks who got it on manuals, but knowing about any type helps. Also - what brand/model did you end up with. I'm not looking for a starter/alarm system though.
DEI is the only brand you need to worry about. If you are not going to get an alarm, then you might as well keep the factory alarm, in which case you will want to keep the factory keyless entry transmitter
Theres a lot to type so ill start from the beginning. Whether you have a manual or auto won't matter because on our cars, there is a neutral safety switch wire on the ecu, which any shop can tap directly into, to ensure 100% of the time the car only starts in neutral.
Lets start from the beginning, with a good unit like a Valet 561R remote start. To remote start the car, units like this need 2 pulses on the remote start activation wire. If I were you, I would use the factory trunk wire for this. When you push your trunk pop button on the factory remote, the trunk pop wire in the car gets a ground pulse. I would cut this wire, and use a relay to hook it up to the 561R instead, so that you would push your trunk pop button twice to remote start, but unfortunately you would lose your factory trunk pop. You can always hook up the 561R to the factory arm and disarm wires in the car, and then use the new DEI remote that will come with the module (and not use the factory remote at all) but if all you want is a remote start and you dont use trunk pop that much, I would save the hassle and do it with the factory remote.
The 561R goes for 70 bucks on ebay, and if you are keeping the factory remote it is a very simple install for any shop. At Circuit City we charge 160 to install a remote start/keyless entry/alarm, so any shop shouldnt charge you more than 100.
I install for Circuit City and I drive a 2k 5 speed maxima, so hit me up on AIM at kpr10is or pm me if you have questions.

Remember, buying DEI products on ebay or any other store thats not an authorized dealer gets you NO warranty. Look around for installers in your area and compare prices. My recommendation is anything DEI.
Is it possible to use the factory remote and use the panic button to remote start? I never use my panic button and wouldn't mind losing it. I have a 97 BTW. Is just installing a remote start something that I could do myself?
I remember reading something a while back about the ability to wire it up so that if you hold the lock button or something for a few seconds, the car would start up with a remote start. I know nothing about the specs. but that's what I read.
Also, if I do this on a 2k2, do I need to put a spare key under the dash so that the car reads the chip? How does the remote start thing actually work?
Thanks,
Brian

Kevin pretty much summed all of it BUT...factory remote range is horrible, and will die more over time. Its just as easy to install a keyless entry sytem rather than an addon.
IF you decide to just addon to the original facotry keyles, then a single wire to your door lock wire can be used. By pressing lock twice or even three time (your choice) will start and shut off the car.
Most shops also will not do it on a manual tranny. Regadless of the fact that it can be safely done on Nissans. If they do it, they will most likely charge you a premium for doing so.

Yes they are provided you have a good processor to run them. While carrying Arc,Audison,Diamond,Eclipse,etc...I didnt want to continue selling Monitor. Aside from that Arc dropped them.
